Default Differences between 3.4 engines

I'm looking at used engines for my '99 996. There are a couple of them on eBay, one is a 1999 M96.01 engine and one is a 2000 M96.04. The '99 has a mechanical throttle and the 2000 has electronic. I need the mechanical one and It's an easy conversion. Besides that, are there any differences I should be concerned about? Is there a preference for one over the other?

You sure it’s an easy conversion? There is one here on the forum for sale that seems to have all of the right upgrades and it’s a cable throttle.

Pretty sure it's as simple as unbolting the electronic throttle and bolting on the cable one. My car is already set up for the cable.

I think you will need to change the engine wire harness and the TB. You will need the ICV connector.

There could also be a fuel line issue. Some have a return line and some use a returnless system but not sure on the cutoff years..

I just did this last year.

1. You need to swap the throttle body.
2. You need to swap the entire engine wiring harness. Just do it one connection at a time and you will be fine.
3. You may need to swap the fuel rails. Some cars have the fuel lines going through the AC compressor for fueling.

I did both swaps in under 4 hours (included removing both wiring harnesses.
