I hate to complicate things even more, but I just thought of something else to check out but it is probably not the issue given your symptoms. There is a fuse inside of the DME box. Once every thing else is checked in the starting circuit and you have to dig deeper...well, maybe. Just putting it out there....

I dunno, I still don’t think the starter or solendoid can be completely ruled out. Here’s why: I cannot find any component that would add time delay in the circuit, once the key is turned. What could be happening is that 12.5v is not making its way to all components, and that back when there was a delay, and it was a few seconds, the starter or solenoid is actually heating up with some current passing through it, and that heat eventually expanded contacts to more completely activate the circuit. Which was the reason why it was only cold start.

It also makes sense that the shop was able to activate the starter directly, and it worked, but only because the shop is heated (in winter) or the car was already warm. I would double check this last bit.

The reason why the car would turnover by direct application of power and not start is by design and is expected. Otherwise, folks could easily steal cars by doing this.

Current path: Battery->battery cable->ignition switch->start lock relay->starter solenoid. Control path: key transponder->clutch microswitch->DME->start lock relay

If the starter spins but the engine doesn't fire up, that's a totally different problem, which requires checking of the crank position sensor, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, ignition, etc.
OK, I didn’t know if the starter comes with the solenoid or is separate. Maybe the solenoid is suspect?

The solenoid comes with the starter. What you said is entirely possible. Depends on where they hot wired the starter. They could supply power to the starter directly or power the solenoid instead.

Immobilizer. Had similar problems on my car after heavy rain days. Some times had to hold the key long time to get car start, until on day nothing happened. I allso had 1year old starter and replaced the ign-switch.
In my case, all that was needed, was pulling the immobilizer ecu out of the car (under the drivers seat) and open the case and clean the motherboard with electronics cleaner.
Dust and moisture was messing with the connections. After cleaning 2015, no problems ever since.

I had the car flat-bedded to Omaha, which was $780. The culprit was a bad ignition switch. No idea if it's something the local shop checked or not, but there it is. Cost to replace: about $900.

I hope your mechanic that ruled out the ignition switch steps up to the plate here...

$800 tow for a $10 switch? Ouch.

Oh, snap! Good memory, 808.

OP, are you going to ask for reimbursement?

Just got the car back today. It was a bad ignition module -- it wouldn't read the chip in the key.

That was $900, then the flatbed to Porsche of Omaha was $780.

So, good times...

Nah. I need to stay on good terms with the Audi/VW dealer. They're my only option in town.
