Disassemble auto shifter

I am disassembling the auto shifter in our car and wanted to know if anyone else has done it?

I need to refinish it.

Needs some serious work

Lift the button from the bottom. It just pops off

Now how to separate the the black part from the leather without destroying it?

It looks like the inner plastic can be separated from the outer part with the leather, I am just not sure how to remove it without wrecking it.

anyone know?
