Default engine options other than ls swap ??

1999 Carrera 3.4/6speed manual.

Just a quick curiosity question. My car is up to 120k miles and I know its going to need the rebuild eventually but man I just hate the idea of spending that kind of money for a motor I cant get more then 320hp from. I love my car and enjoy the get up and go of the 3.4 but it sure would be nice to have some more options out there other than the genius who chime in and say "should of bought a turbo" lol

so aside from cutting up my engine bay supports and going through the huge undertaking of an ls swap. is there any options out there for the 3.4 when rebuilding it, swapping it for something else etc? I've read something about possible stroker for the 3.4 but cant find anything for it.

anything that wont cost $25k lol

again just kind of a curious question as I'm sure others have thought about it.

thanks
Brian

Audi 2.7T will bolt right up to your 996 transmission (though you might need to do some customizing with the starter location). It's been swapped into a few Boxsters I know of, so getting one into a 996 shouldn't be too much work.

A great story, well told. Including the fire.

I was so pumped about an Audi swap right up until the car turned into a pile of ash.

It depends on where you live. In California, unless you have a builder who knows the ropes, replacing with a "correct" engine is the easiest way to proceed from an emissions POV.

There are many, many shops who will bore out the block (and fit sleeves) to increase displacement. There are also builders who will rebuild @ the stock displacement but with more robust parts. Then there are budget builders. And THEN there are speed shops who use arcane magic to turn extraordinary amounts of money into small amounts of fun.

If I wind up in your position, I'll rebuild the motor (either stock displacement or bigger...) or store the car until I have the funds to do so.

Im curious what it would take to swap in a 996 turbo motor? I saw one for sale locally with low miles for 13k.

The swap itself should be relatively "plug and play", but you'd want an entire donor car because nearly all of the wiring harnesses and electronics are different on the Turbo (not to mention a lot of the coolant lines and whatnot). Also, you'd want all the other cool Turbo stuff like the brakes. If you bought just an engine, you'd regret trying it.

This guy looks like he regrets a turbo swap.

Actually I regret every time I look at those fender louvers. The want is strong.

this is an amazing, amazing deal. Not sure how you do all of that for that price but if so, this is what these folks need.

keeping with the theme of the thread.... do you offer anything in regards to performance increase, displacement, turbo, cams, porting etc.? the price is pretty much what everyone is charging which we are all going to be paying at one point or another but what about upgrades? that's not a hit against your post, you offer a good deal I just mean in regards to getting a little more umph out of these cars.

I have the fabspeed exhaust system, cold air intake and a tune that doesn't work right. Fabspeed has said they can supercharge my motor for $10k but I would need to get it rebuilt first as my miles are to high(127k) for the boost. I agree, I'd want to get my motor rebuilt before adding that anyway but then I'm at $10k for a rebuild, $10k for a supercharger.... $20k for 400hp I could swap in the dreaded ls for that much and get more hp with a few CHEAP mods to the ls motor.

our car are what they are... like mentioned just curious about options and wishing there was more.

Would love the list of builders who are doing nickies and solution and re & re for $10k.

it was more like 25k for all that work when I was looking a couple of years ago

I just did a search yesterday before posting this thread on yahoo. seen lots of places offering complete rebuilds for around $10k. some with more and some with less options. only place I seen $25k was pelican parts. prices are coming down a bit since theirs a need for it. check out youtube (I did) lots of builders trying to get there names out there and get business as well there. there is a company in Wisconsin offering the coatings for the diy builders as well.

like mentioned... that wasn't a slam on his post, that sounds like a great deal. but this thread is about performance upgrades.

Guess I would need to look myself but I have a hard time believing a builder makes any money doing a nickies and ims solution job for 10k when all said and done. I bought every part and did the labor myself, and I wasn't remotely close to 10k.

I am a 3.6 though.
