Default NEED HELP on Winter Wheel Setup

Hello,

I plan on purchasing a 2003 911 Targa and was wondering what size tires/rims for winter driving is recommended? I called a rep from Discount Tires and he says 225/45/17 square setup should work, and I was wondering what you thought about this suggestion?

Thanks,

Dan

Lots of things will work but 225/45-17 would look pretty agricultural. Other options depend on how serious you are about winter driving. 225/40-18 and 255/35-18 sets are available in real winter tires. If All-Season tires would work for your climate, 225/40-18 and 285/35-18 is an option. It also depends on what wheel size you have.

If the car you are looking at is all-wheel drive (C4) you need to match diameters pretty closely.

Damon at Tire Rack might be worth calling.

Why deviate from the wheel and tire combination recommended by Porsche?

Oddly, the wheel diameters recommended by Porsche don't match up very well with the AWD system on the 996...

Interesting. I ran the recommended sizes on my 996 C4S.

I run 225/45 R17's on all four for the winter and it works great. Summer is a different setup with 18's with wider lower profile tires.
