A question about Ignitions in range 1 and 2
I do not yet own a Porsche but I am considering the purchase of a 996 C2 with almost 100000 miles. It looks clean and drives well. I purchased a Durametric and determined that it has 2992 hours overall with 5603 range 1 ignitions (the most recent at 2705 hours) and a single range 2 event back at 1534 hours. Reading through the forums I think this equates to about 15 seconds total over 7300 rpm with the over 7900 rpm type 2 event occurring 1458 hours ago. There is no apparent excess smoke or concerning engine noise even at startup. I believe that the car was a recent trade-in to a local BMW dealer. My sense is that the car is viable but I would appreciate advice from the forum before I purchase.
Thank you

It sounds like a good car. Old range 2 aren’t concerning unless it’s a really high number. At which point you can usually assume that they’ve rebuilt/replaced the engine since then.

Thank you both.... I look forward to moving forward with my first 996 and hopefully becoming active in the forum. I currently drive a 20 valve Audi URS6 and thoroughly recognize the value of an active forum based on my experience on QuattroWorld..
Thanks again

General rule is the engine is in danger if the type 2 over rev was under 180 hours ago (according to Porsche warranty documentation) not sure how valid that is now.

Definitely a concern...if you're sitting across the counter from the warranty claims adjuster. That's the only time a single, ancient range-2 over-rev is actually a problem.
