Default Cup holder failure mode 2 - anyone successfully repaired it?

My cup holder has experienced a failure. It is the pop out and pull for 2nd holders style. It appears that the front trim piece actually slides as the cup holder comes out, and then slides back as its being pushed back in. This sliding action is controlled by a gear - and the gear is no longer being driven (its loose).

So my assumption is that there are one or more gears inside that drive the gear in question and one of them has broken or become mis-aligned.

Before I start taking things apart, I wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this and what the results were.

Thanks!
Charlie

I have the same issue but I wasn't sure how they were supposed to work (has always been like that in my car). I dont ever use those cupholders and bought some other ones from ultimate cup holder or whatever but I would like to get the top one fixed even though I never use it..

I never use the cup holders. Anything over 1mph and that beverage is falling out. Where do you put your cell phone?

I bought this from Ultimatecupholders.com. They’re great. Bought this because I have the same style holder you have in the dash and my mug tilted in it with the top open for sipping and spiulled coffee on my Pioneer head unit. Yup, destroyed the head unit. Luckily I have a great audio shop and they got it replaced under warranty even though this is not usually covered. So now the dash cupholder stays closed and will never be used again. The floor ones are right at hand, don’t cover the vent and cups never spill. I don’t work for them, but this is an awesome solution. http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/im...cup-320-ds.jpg

I didn't know it was supposed to slide over as it closes... I've always just done it with my finger and shook my head at a stupid design every time... now I know it was actually broken.

Too funny that we worry about cup holders! I take a mug to work with me everyday. My cup holder works, but it sticks all the time. I have to push in the corner at the same time I am popping out the other one. Annoying right? 😜

Atrox, I bought one of these to sit on the dash. I haven't used it yet but will next spring when I use Google Maps on my iPhone. It was very inexpensive if it doesn't work out!

Funny enough, I've found the cupholder to work quite well - much better than the cup holders in my Z4.

I looked at it a bit closer today - the gear/toothing is on one side and there is an arm/lever the comes off the back side. I'm able to spin the piece all the way around and see that the arm has broken. So... next step is to remove the cup holder and try to disassemble it to get a better idea of what that piece looks like and if repair is possible. Going to do a bit of research on welding plastic, as well as determine if this could finally be a valid excuse to buy a 3d printer.

Btw - the previous owner did the climate control relocate and put in a double din nav system. Below it, they added the pocket/storage area and my iPhone 7+ fits perfectly in it.

Best of luck with the rebuild. It's tough right now, but you'll get through all this.

I bought the fascia piece on Amazon; I recall that they were also available on eBay.

Thanks. My problem isn't with the fascia though, its the gear that actually drives it.

Go a working 2nd hand unit then don't ever touch it again

Who puts drinks or things in those holders anyway?! Haha, I've got a food and beverage ban in my cabin
