Shifter Issue

Shifter Issue
Just changed the manual transmission & fork, front & rear axle boots on a 2004 Carrera 4S. After the transmission change, the shifter went. New cables needed to be replaced. PROBLEM IS: The Shifter never goes (springs) back to Home Base. Example:U can feel the tension by going to 5th gear but when U go back down, shifter STAYS all the way to the right. I doesn't spring back to it's original home spot. This gets very confusing when U have to always focus on where your shifter was last. Mechanic states no way to correct this because original cables do not exist anymore. Would appreciate any ideas out there. YannisFur@aol.com
CONCLUSION; 11/17/17... Thanks 4 all the suggestions out there. Brought the C4S to Porsche of Roslyn who said Eagle's Nest of Syosset put the WRONG CABLES in. They claim it was ALL Legend Porsche in Amitiville's fault for giving them the wrong part 2X's. I knew there was a problem from day one but they told me that is how the new cables operate. BOLOGNA !!! Nobody wanted to accept responsibility but believe me, someone will B paying this new Bill of $1,428.34 to Porsche from Roslyn eventually. All I know is a month of headaches ALL 4 nothing..

The shifter cables should not matter, they simply convey the movement of the shifter position to the transmission. The shifter mechanism itself is where the springs are located to center the shifter into the neutral position. Might have to get in there and check out why it is not centering. Somebody who has had their shifter apart might have a better clue.
Good video on shifter repair
Notice the two spring things on the workbench

SHIFTER ISSUES
Thank U very much for your reply. The problem is the cables were replaced with a new version from Porsche. My Mechanic said that the new cables are the problem which doesn't sound correct. The pictures/movie U sent is for a play in a shifter. The new cables made my shifter very tight. The problem is that it springs to REVERSE and springs to 5th or 6th gear. The problem is that when pulled away from that gear, it does not spring back to Home.

Unless I am mistaken, those springs in the lower photo don't make the shifter spring back. They are just to hold the locking collars in position to keep the end on the cable. At least that is the way they function on my car.

The springs (3 of them) responsible to take the shifter back to neutral (from left and right) is inside the transmission. If your cables are not binding, the only conclusion is something is wrong inside the transmission.
One spring (strongest) is to bring the shifter back to neutral from reverse. The next strong spring is to bring the shifter from 1st/2nd to neutral and the last spring for 5th/6th to neutral.
You can disconnect the cables on the transmission end and check the two levers on the transmission and feel if one of them has the spring action.

Well, I learn something new everyday. Anyway, to the OP - you said you changed out the manual transmission & fork, does that mean you got a new or different manual transmission? Where did you get it? And maybe a gearbox expert could help narrow down the transmission internal issue http://www.gboxweb.com/index.html

Guessing that the OP meant the arm that actuates the clutch rather than the shift forks inside the transmission?
