key replacement
New to the 996 and was wondering if there is any other way to order a 2nd key as opposed to going to the dealer. My car came with 1 key and want to get a 2nd. Thanks in advance.

Call your local indie shop, they should be able to help you. Cheaper than the dealer. I think I paid about $170 because I already have a valet key so a locksmith was not needed. I only had to pay for the remote and the programming. I believe the remote itself is about $50.

I'm going through the process now. Key has to be ordered from Germany by the dealer. Then programmed by the dealer. I went this route so I know it's done right and will work properly. All in it will be about $480.

This is patently false. One does not have to go through a dealer to get a new key. A good porsche independent repair facility can do this for customers. If there are none of those around then you have to go to the dealer b/c there are no other options.

I just ordered another key myself, from a dealer. $140 for the metal blank cut with my VIN. $190 for the remote. $50 for marrying it to the car. Yikes, but I had to go for it!

Part 986-637-244-18 for transponder key fob around $160 delivered from most P-car shops. Keysinthepost.com for cut blade and valet key-$45. Programming at dealer (must have PIWIS), approx one hour of labor charged (rip-off), so ~$100. I just did mine this route, and all's well. You need the code with new fob to program to your car's system, so be aware. Volvo replacement keys are actually more expensive!

I just bought 2 blanks from ebay with the HAA stamped on them for $14. And purchased a used working key transmitter with cut blade for $45. So, can I get the key cut, change the new blade with the blade that's coming with the transmitter and then just go have it reprogrammed?

But if you want a key with remote, I would go through the indie shop, they probably have the same remote as "ebay" ones but they would have already programmed a few so you know it will work with your car. If you buy from ebay and the indie shop cannot program it, you would have to go through the hassle of returning it in case it is a counterfeit. My understanding is the chip inside needs to be genuine Porsche or certified Porsche before it can be programmed. One of my spare remotes is from a 986 Boxster so it does not have to be 996 remote specifically.
Call the indie and see how much they would charge. It does take long ( a couple of hours), but only 5 minutes to program. The long part are waiting for mobile key maker to come and cut the key and waiting to get the code for your VIN before the remote can be programmed. Dealer does the same, but they charge you for the 2 hours wait! Hope that helps. Good luck.

I bought the body of the key on eBay from a local Porsche dealer for ~$150, and purchased a cut key blank from the UK (using a photo of my existing key's cut surfaces) for another $30.
Then I took the above to a local independent, and they were able to use their PIWIS and some vehicle-specific code from Porsche to allow the new keys to work correctly. IIRC, they charged $75 per key to do the coding for two additional keys.

$128 for the transmitter here:

The trick to the process is that you need the Code that is specific to the particular transmitter you have. This code gets programmed into the security system of your car - usually by a dealer or someone with a PIWIS.
The physical key itself is easily copied. You can take a picture of it and send it to an online service that will send you a key back for under $20.

I used a service here...

I emailed a photo of my key and they mailed me a genuine Porsche electronic key cut for my car. All I had to do was have the Porsche dealer program it.
They are in England. I know it sounds crazy and I was at first skeptical but I saved a ton.
Somehow they can calculate the cuts from the photo.
IIRC it was under $200 all in! That was almost two years ago.

Any reputable locksmith can cut the key blade. As others mentioned, the two steps that require technical intervention are pairing the remote transmitter to the car and then pairing the transponder chip to the car. You don't have to spend $400+ to get this all done.
