1999 (UK T plate) 996 C4 is making whine noise around front right wheel arch
Hello,
Looking for advice or feedback on a niggling intermittent whine issue with my 1999 (UK T plate) 996 C4, which is making a whining noise in or around front right wheel arch.
A M4A format sound file is attached, not the greatest quality, it was recorded on a phone near the front RHS wheel arch.
On review of this and other Porsche 911/996 forums, two possible sources are (I think) ... either ...
(1) fuel pump (which was replaced recently at c. 110 K miles), when the whine noise is present, the car "chirrups" twice when you turn the ignition on with the key. Then the whine begins when you start the engine, but as I said it is intermittent.
Quite often the car starts and runs with no whine. My local Porsche specialist (ie non dealer) garage has had a look but cannot isolate the source.
Last week, it took me some driving distance (c. 30 miles) to induce the whine noise, before I drove to the garage) and the local Porsche specialist thought it may have been the fuel pump vibrating in the C4 fuel saddle tanks ... however ... we then took the fuel filler cap off and listened into the tank, but it did not appear to be any noisier when we did this. We did expect it to be noisier, as you have a direct tube into the saddle tanks.
(2) The AC system, the AC condensors / radiators were also replaced recently, the front to back AC pipework was also replaced. The AC system was then recharged and I have been running it on Auto since, as you are supposed to do I now understand, to keep the AC system lubricated. I used to live in Scotland, so I did bother with getting the AC fixed up 'til we moved to the South..
Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot this 996 C4 whine issue ? Does the sound file help any ? Or are there any previous forum threads I should take a look at ?
