BUT, and this is a big BUT. With Supra, you are running into the same issue as with 959 or 993 Porsche. It is an appreciating, almost irreplaceable car. You will not enjoy driving it as much, as you will always be worried about scratches, damaging the car, car getting stolen etc.

With 996, you can beat on it and not give a single F.
i am not worried about the dents/dings/scratches as I have 7 body shops I manage 😜.

Hawk, do you have siblings that might want the Supra too? If so, snag it now before it become a center piece for family fights. Many (including me) didn't have a clue of the value, but after checking book value and auction prices, you'd be crazy not to grab it.

Well...you are golden then ^^. You can make some extra $$$ pulling up to every car and asking "What's the retail on one of those?"

Yes, 5 siblings. I could see a couple of them fighting me for it, but I am the oldest son, so I called dibs long ago 😜

Well...it’s in Seattle and I am in Vegas. I just asked my dad to take a couple and send them to me, but he and my mom are on a road trip for a few weeks so it won’t be until Thanksgiving, but I will post them up if/when he replies.

He doesn't really want to sell, you should just let him keep it. How about you swap cars for a while?

Supra ALL DAY! It's the last year of the legend in the US and a true 6 speed.

I still have mine (Premier Edition 6 speed) and not only does she get thumbs up at the PCA events, the "is it for sale?", "NICE SUPRA!" at the gas station and the thumbs up while driving around.

Supra. It is an appreciating modern classic. One day I will have one myself.

I hear the Supra is a good investment and performs better. But, I would keep the 911 and find a way to buy it too. I never dreamed about owning a Toyota. I did, since about 12, dream about a 911.

So last year, before buying the 996, I asked my dad one last time and surprisingly, he said yes and to make him an offer. I asked what the family price was and he said $30k. I know market value for his car is around $40k or so, do it was a great deal, but it’s not like I was going to turn around and sell it, so what does market value matter. In discussing things with my wife, she has always like Porsche’s and she isn’t a fan of the Supra...so that’s how I ended up in the 996.
Ok, now I get it... From a strictly financial standpoint the Supra is the clear winner - but like you said, it's not like you're just going to turn around and sell "a family heirloom". From a strictly performance standpoint it's probably a little closer-I can't imagine the Supra handles any better than the Carrera, but straight line/sheer speed, the Supra still wins out. Pure cache' - Porsche vs. Toyota? Really? Not even close (except for maybe the speed racer, fast & furious, ricer fanboi contingent - oooh that's unfair...) The wife's preference - this is dangerous territory, and really your purview to negotiate!!! Sounds like a slippery slope to me - you may have to pass and let one of your lucky siblings take advantage of the old man's offer...

Figure out a way to keep both. It's a problem to be solved not an insurmountable hurdle. Since it's your dad get it for less too.

I want to add a 3rd gen RX7 to my fleet someday soon. It is the pinnacle of Japanese engineering .

Twin CT12B's with a Getrag V160 from the factory.

Comparing a Supra to a 911 never really made sense to me. It's just like comparison with motos vs exotics racing on a freeway to see who's faster.

Japanese cars have always been the underdog but they are slowly making their way as far as collectability. The 90's JDM golden era showcased a lot of fun Japanese cars that are starting to make their mark.

I remember seeing this ad in the car mags as a kid and thought, clever marketing but yeah I did dream of owning a Nissan... R34 Skyline GTR V Spec!

Probably a generational thing. When I was a kid, Toyota didn’t have a lot going for it in the performance realm. Reliability, yes, performance, not so much. And every Nissan I can think of was an econobox.
