Or air in the line. Try bleeding the clutch to see if it gets better. If it does try to find how air got in/fluid leaked out.

When the clutch failed in my 996 C4S, the symptoms suddenly appeared, and then the car was undriveable. It happened over a period of about 48 hours. One day, it was performing normally. The next day, I had trouble getting it into gear, especially 1st. The next day, I couldn’t drive it. The clutch pedal never changed much. If anything, it got a bit stiffer towards the end.

I once owned a 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider, so I know quirky defects!

Dennis: What was the root cause of your clutch failure, if you recall? Just curious.

"Alfa". Pretty funny! A guy I know just asked me about the new Alfa's and we discussed the poor history of previous Alfa's. He told me an Alfa salesperson said they can't sell them due to the previous history!

I don’t recall the exact nature of the failure. I had the clutch and associated hardware replaced, and I had the LN IMS bearing installed while everything was apart. That was at roughly 105K miles.
