how does the car sense that the door is open?

Basically, when you pull on the door handle (interior or exterior), an associated micro switch droops the window. As the door is opened (and off the striker latch) the latch micro switch takes over and holds the window in droop. When the latch reengages upon closing, the latch microswitch recognizes, the window goes back up, and waits for the next signal from one of the door handle microswitches.

Out of the 3 microswitches detailed above, the one that the car's computer uses to sense if the door is open or closed is the one integrated with the door lock mechanism.
Both of mine are now bad on my Boxster, so the car thinks the doors are always closed and sends the windows back up when i release the door handles, but luckily I can use the key to roll the windows up and down when I am getting in and out.
