Looking at 02 996 with Motor Replaced in 07 by Porsche

So the car has 95K and the motor was replaced with a new one by Porsche in 2007 at 47K.

Do I still have to worry about the IMS, just like I would if I was buying one with around 50K that had the original motor? I assume that if this one fails, Porsche won't do anything since the motor is 10 years old. I do not know it they replaced it with a new 2007 year motor either.

The 2007 replacement motor from the Porsche factory is what is called a reman motor. They are reputedly very solid - they beefed up a lot of the weak components, and I have never read of a reman failing. There are a couple of posts out there that have claimed it by unscrupulous posters/trolls but when pressed for the serial number of the reman engine, they scurried away.

I had a reman motor in my 02 996 and drove it for over another 60K miles - extremely reliable, didn't lose any noticeable oil between my 5K oil changes, and because it came with almost every single component including the AOS, coils, etc etc new, the car required little to no engine related repairs in the 6 subsequent years I drove it.

Enjoy.

No real way to check the IMS unless you drop the transmission

I'd look at the engine number to see if its an M96 or M97 engine.

No real way to check the IMS unless you drop the transmission so i'd factor it in regardless.

M97 requires a tear down to replace the IMS the M96 can be replaced without.

No, there were NO M97 engines put in as replacements on a 996 even as reman. (do a search).

The reman 996 engine is a beefed up version of the M96. The serial number should start with AT

The reman 996 has a bigger IMS and is NOT replaceable without splitting the case, but non of those have failed so there you go - a moot point.

So you're saying no M97's in a 996?

Great info here, thank you!

Yes, correct my mistake the M97 was only introduced in the larger 3.8L variant, its the M96 that crossed over between the 996 and early Carrera 997.

M97 was introduced into the 997 Carrera S bigger IMS but not without bore scoring issues.

Was replaced with an 05 996 Carrera Reman motor P/N 996-100-995-DX

Point of reference. I have a 3.4 replaced by Porsche on 3/2005. It is an AT code engine and the part number is 996-100-996-NX. It had a single row IMS that I replaced with a LN bearing in 2010 when the engine had ~35k on it.

Point being in 2005 the "AT" reman motors still had the usual IMS bearing, not the bigger non replaceable one

They wouldn't cover it at this point if it DID have the original 50k motor either so that's kind of a moot point. The bigger bearing may not be replacable but the (anecdotal) data indicates it wouldn't ever need replacing so who cares.

My car is an '02 as well with a Reman engine installed by the dealer in '08 at 53k miles. Currently has over 80k, ZERO issues. I think this is the sweet spot for a 996 - factory Reman engine without a huge number of miles on it. I haven't heard of a Reman failing, at least not one that was verified. I'd buy the car and personally value it higher over an original one with the original engine and same total chassis mileage.

MY00 car here with a factory reman engine (M96/04AT66Y66560) in February 2008 at 50k miles - car is currently at 140k, so 90k on the engine.

For me the reman engine with the "big" IMS bearing was definitely a plus when buying it. That and a whole bunch of recent suspension and transmission work. But also it was local, priced right and I really wanted a ME :D

I feel your pain, love my 996 but take my Corvette C7 to the track
