996 engine compartment fan failure warning
My 02 996 gets an engine compartment fan warning when it's hotter outside and I've driven the car for more than 20 minutes. This causes the light on the water temperature gauge to flash red on and off. Water temps remain normal. What's odd is that the engine compartment fan works and will remain running while te vehicle is off to cool the engine bay.
Does anyone one know why I keep getting this warning ?
Thanks for for the help

Did the warning msg say the engine compartment fan? Check the engine compartment temp sensor sitting between the intake manifold between cyl #4&5. It may have been knocked off of its position.

From Slakker:
Four functions of the coolant warning light:
1. Engine coolant level too low
— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz)
2. Engine compartment temperature too high
— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty)
3. Engine coolant temperature too high
— light is lit; pointer on the right
4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty
— light flashes rapidly (1 Hz); pointer on the right
Note
The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously
(1Hz = 1 flash per second. 0.5Hz = 2 seconds per flash)
So it might be the temperature sensor is faulty (if the light is rapid flashing).

I'm with Ahsai on this one. What I find strange is you are in Alberta and your engine compartment fan is running. I live in Florida and I can count on one hand the number of times my engine compartment fan has come on. Rarely happens. But it will happen if the sensor pops out of the grommet and is sitting on the engine.

I'm in N Cal where today's hi will be 106F and mine runs frequently. Even in the winter when I get off the freeway it will come on for a few seconds. 2002C2

Reviving a thread to hopefully get last years questions answered. Got my 05 C4S out of storage last week and have driven it a few times for extended periods in various spring temps. Highest temp today was mid to low 70s and again got the Engine Compartment Fan Failure warning with a blinking red on the temp gauge. Only came on for a few seconds then disappeared. But then came home and the parked and the engine compartment fan came on for 10-15 minutes. I only drove approximately 7-8 miles with no spirited driving at all. Temp gauge remained perfect, just beyond 180. Sensor issue? Anyone have a pic as to where this engine compartment fan sensor is located?
