This is most certainly an 'OBO' situation. I'm not entirely certain if my asking price reflects the "real world" or not.

Is it accurate that the 1996 ECU cannot be flashed as easy as the 1997. I thought they were pretty much identical.

The 97 ecu has 2 chips, one for code and other for data(?). To reprogram, you unsolder one of the chips, reprogram and solder back on.
The 96 ecu has one chip that does both. It requires someone who can program both functions or an additional circuit board that separates things so you can use the 2 chips. Using an extra circuit board works okay but is prone to failures. So a 96 can be reprogrammed but not straight forward. I understand that the 96 chip is a faster chip and sone feel cars run better with 96 chip (?).
These chips are no longer available/made.
The 97 also has the potential, as I understand, to be programmed through the obd2 port (like newer cars) although slow and I don't think any of the tuners do so.
(also one of the arguments for the 97 -car or ecu - being worth more)
(I have multiple ecu's that I'm hoarding...).

0 261 203 758 (Turbo version)
0 261 204 008 (N/A version)

Like Basal says, they used to not be able to be tuned because of how they were built.

That is an excellent price...anyone that has a modded ECU and needs to do smogging do yourself a favor and snap this up. I recently bought a stock ECU from a fellow rennlister and it was money well spent. Just plugged it in, Set the readiness codes and passed smog like a champ.

Hell at that price anyone that actually drives a bunch may want it as back up should yours fail and they are $5k in the marketplace I believe.

Like Chad was saying, this is worth way more than $5 bills. I would list it on fleabay, and start at 11-1200, and see if ya get anything. Cant hurt.
