Default Which turbo to get

Thinking about picking up another car. I have somewhat narrowed it down to a 94 3.6 Turbo and a 993 TT. Has anyone owned or driven both. Pros and cons of each would be appreciated. Like to keep it between $ 60k and $ 70K. There is a black 3.6 that is really tempting. It show rebuilt engine by factory 12,000 miles ago and asking $ 55k for it. Factory rebuilt sound okay to me. Any areas of concern there.

In market now, so if you know of any specific cars, let me know.

Doug,

I suggest you pm oldguy, who has had some actual experience buying a car from Sloan.

I wish I could help you with the comparison, but I fell in love with the 993 style and the 6-speed gearbox (not to mention the AWD and the lack of turbo lag) and went straight for the 993TT without driving the 3.6.

Doug,

the turbo 3,6 is much rarer and purer than the 993TT, refined yet raw (when asked)more of an animal and, in my opinion, much better-looking. The TT on the other hand, is more user-friendly (no turbo lag, 6-speed box, 4WD) more of an everyday car, much more forgiving, better all-rounder - in the hands of an average driver than turbo 3,6. I would personally go for a 993 turbo S (raw and rare!).

Drive them both if you get a chance - it's your money and your choice.

Best regards

Emilios

P.S. Judging by your other P-cars, a 993 Turbo S is definitely missing from your collection!

I will drive my TT mostly every day. Looking for something maybe different and to keep around a while. More of a play toy.

Not many P-cars around here, but I will definitely try to find both to drive somewhere.

A 993 TT S is more than I want to spend, but that would be nice.

I owned a 3.6 Turbo and currently have a 993TT. The 3.6 was in my opinion the best looking Porsche ever made. It looked like a brute with the pronounced wide fenders, etc. It lacks a lot of the improvements of the 993. 5sp vs. 6sp, 60 less HP, one turbo vs. two, CIS fuel injection vs. DME, 2 wheel drive, banana arm rear suspension. The 993TT is technically better in just about every category. The 3.6Ts are rare. Then again, so are the '97 993TTs and they are the pinnacle of the air cooled technology built by Porsche.

So I love them both. They each have their pluses and minuses. In the end, I think I like the 993TT better.

Thanks Bob. Both look great, but the 3.6 has a certain allure. I will drive both as soon as I can locate a few cars. Will the 993TT not be very similar to driving my 996 TT. Also, should I be very weary of the 20 to 30k mile 993 TTs on ebay and elsewhere that are in the low 60k range or are there just good deals to be had now.

Doug,

If properly cared for, a 993TT with 100,000+ miles can be a very reliable car. In my mind, a 20K or 30K car is very low mileage, and in no way should this be a negative for a purchase. The key is the condition, not the miles. Be wary of eBay, but there ARE some good deals, if your eyes are open.

With respect towards comparing the 3.6turbo, the 993TT, and the 996TT, I wonder if it is a fair judegment to say that each of those models is an equal step towards "civility"? The trick is to determine just how much "civility" works for you.

Doug,

Thanks for the compliment. I love my car, 58,000 miles and all. I need shocks (still have the crappy originals), and I suppose the clutch won't last forever (but its not slipping), but it is the perfect car for me, since I don't feel like I'm destroying the value by driving the car. I bought it a year ago with 49,000 miles on it.

Listen to that Steve... Did you hear it? It is the sound of PSS9s calling to you.... They are saying "beat me, hurt me, make me take late apex's".... So I installed another set today on Icerbofh's car. I have three more installs scheduled over the next 2 weeks. Man I've been busy.

Take care Steve. I use the new keychain on my new tow vehicle. Thanks again.

Bob,

A Rennlister said he was going to sell me the PSS-9s off his race car... he was switching to "JRZ" or somesuch. Only about 3000 miles on them. The trouble is, he's not responding to email enquiries, so I don't know if I should go elsewhere or not. We have a "handshake" deal, and I don't want to back out, plus his price was really fair. Ever since you drove my car and mentioned how crappy the shocks are, its been driving me crazy. PSS-9s... PSS-9s. I wish I knew what was happening with the seller.

Several of the PSS9s that I have done recently had around 25,000 miles on them and they were all COMPLETELY shot. The ones today on Icerbofh's car could be pushed in quickly with about 10 lbs of pressure, then they did not even have hardly enough pressure to rebound. So when you do upgrade, you'll probably have a much nicer ride as you a pretty much riding on the springs with little to no dampening, and then there is the better performance thing too...

Good luck Steve.

I have owned both. I have also owned NA 993s and 964s. There is a big difference in the basic platform of the these two cars. Although the cars are built relatively the same, with most of the same parts, the 993 just feels more comfortbale and makes a better daily driver. I also had previous felt the 3.6 turbo was the best looking turbo that Porsche made. I thought this until I place both cars beside each other. I think the 993tt is more refined and aerodynmaic than the 3.6. I get alot more compliments on my 993tt. Most people though the 3.6 was an "old" Porsche.

As far as power, I was amazed the first time I drove the 3.6. I have previous raced 934s and GT2s. I was still amazed at the power 3.6. The 993tt is smoother, there is little turbo lag. The 4wheel drive is comforting.

Bottom line, drive them both and make your decision. I don't regret selling my 3.6 and buying the twin.

Thanks to bob, I have new shocks! As bob said, the old ones were completely blown at 26k miles. It was rainy last night when I drove home. That as well as the fact that I need to wait till this Friday to get the car aligned and balanced meant that I could not drive too quickly. Looking forward to next Saturday being a nice day !

Now is anyone up for a drive next weekend if the weather is nice?
