Hot sidemufflers.
Anyone have experience of side mufflers getting uncomfortably hot after being out for a drive? Bad cats or something else?
I have RUF fiberglass rear bumpers and feels like side mufflers are getting a little to hot for comfort .

Yes the mufflers generate a lot of heat tucked into the side of the engine. That is why the Ruf bumpers have the openings in the sides of the bumpers to let some of the heat out. The problem is that unless you've added an insulator on the inside of your bumpers, they are wide open to all of that heat. The factory bumpers have built in aluminum heat shields to protect the bumpers from the heat of the mufflers. It is not unusual for the Ruf bumpers to be very hot to the touch after a drive. Your only options is to remove the bumper and have the inside of the bumper insulated or remove the mufflers and go with a muffler bypass.

Removing those mufflers all depends on your tolerance for noise. Because of the turbos, I find the lower RPM and idling louder than at speed, and my 3" system with sport cats is way too loud with just bypasses. On the original exhaust, it was tolerable because the cats were not as free flowing and the pipes more restricted.
I will go back to removing the mufflers, but I need to put in some small mufflers on the return before the tips or it will be too loud - especially coming home later at night.
But definitely those mufflers get hot and require heat shielding. I also do not like the way they block the cooling for the turbos ...
Cheers,
Mike

I've noticed some of the aftermarket mufflers (Cargraphic and perhaps others) appear smaller than the stock mufflers which might make them less problematic. Anyone comment of this from experience?

The ONLY reason I EVER have cans on, is out of laziness. I hate having to put em in, and yank em out, any time I go to the track. When I have some time between track days, my "cookers" are resting in the garage.

I bought a set of these a while ago (about $250 bucks), and they're not bad, as a cheaper option. Yes some drone (2000-2800 rpm), but I am not in those rpms much. They won't pass sound at MRLS either, so they sit also. Neat sound though, nice growl. I'm cat less though.

I love the burble/rumble/cough/snort of my bypass pipes :-)
