Default Blue smoke

Just started my 993tt after a few months of sitting in the garage.
Getting a little blue smoke out of the passenger side exhaust.
Oil level is fine, same with pressure.
Anyone had the same issue?

Car ran just fine, just as well as last time I drove it in May.

Same hapend to mine couple of times before (between starts month to month or so).

Oil level is critical, maybe bit below of the low section of the dipstick. Make sure the turbos are in good condition.

Make sure the smaller OE Porsche oil filter is low torqued or in my case "hand torqued" only , this helped in my case to reduce the blue smoke or cycles of starts with smoke.

Lastly if still smoke randomly at the starts, you might start looking either oil turbo return lines with a trap section ( "U" somehwere in the middle) or oil feed lines for the turbos with check valves (I did purchase this last item and installed it, about to test it yet).

That's all I can think that can cause smoke at the start up when the engine is left weeks/months of inactivity.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, a higher oil engine grade also helps, in my case a I use V-Twin 20W50

If it clears up after a minute and doesn't reoccur, don't worry too much about it. If it smokes heavily for several minutes, you may have an issue with the small filter.

so:

If it clears and doesn't reoccur, do nothing and enjoy

If it continues for minutes and reoccurs:

Install new small oil filter
remove intercooler, drain oil from, clean with solvent/degreaser/dawn, whatever
Remove the silicone rubber connector from the cold side of the turbo to the intake. See if you got a bunch of oil in those tubes. If so, drain them.

this should resolve the issue. If not, you may want to look at check valves.

Thanks guys, RL is a great place. I'll keep driving it and see what happens. How often do you change oil and filter on these cars? Unfortunately the 993tt doesn't get driven enough to go by the miles. Once/year or every other year?

Annually at the least, or every 5k or so, if it's street driven. 20w-50 oil only, especially where you are, doesn't see much freezing temps.

I'm the same as miles never pile up so I do oil change once a year.

These cars have a ton of oil in them- let them set and it will seep out and either burn up on the heat exchangers or by cylinder- burning a little oil is ok. Better than non burn and a high temp motor

Have driven the car every day, smoke is gone. Always makes me freak out when I see blue smoke behind me. Spending Summer's away from humid Florida. Good for humans but not for cars....
Guess there is a lot to be said for not letting these cars sit for to long.
Taking it in for an oil change next Wednesday. Last one was in Nov 2015.

I've spoken to several Exxon engineers and they feel we are wasting our money changing oil too frequently. I might put 1k miles on in a year so she gets new V Twin oil and factory filters every 2 years. The 2 techs is use gave me the same advice. I get the brake fluid done at the same time.

The only time I get the puff is if she's moved without being run to full operating temp so I ask service people to minimize shuffling it around. Seems to work.

I think about the "waste" of changing oil too soon. But I feel that, regardless of mileage, it's safer/smarter to do it too early, than later. We go from high 20s-mid 30s during the coldest times of the year. Then to over 105, for 30 days at a time in the summer. I know it may be old school, but feel oil ran in a certain climate, has broken down, and won't be as effective in the polar opposite temps. Could be that I subconsciously feel that oil companies aren't making enough, and I wanna help them out.

A little smoke out of the passenger side on start up is common in TT's when not driven often.
Drive and enjoy more and you shud be fine. Watch oil fill 1/3 up stick hot.
I also installed check valves and Ruf p-traps and its solid with 48k miles.

Thanks! Drove the car all weekend. No more smoke. Had the oil and filter changed by my Indy this Wednesday. Took it for a long drive yesterday just to make sure everything is fine. They are truly special cars.

How do you like the F car? Do you miss the 4.0?

Might be one of the turbo seals starting to go. Remember these cars are 20 years old
