WHY does the 4wd make the steering so numb?
I've wondered why the 993 turbo steering is a little 'vague' since day one of ownership and wonder how much of it is due to the front's being powered vs geometry in general?
Every other awd / 4wd car can manage it. Even some FWD cars!
So, before I rip the front bits out, anyone?

^^^^^I also have the poly rack bushings, along with H&R sways, and I am happy with feedback, input response time. I am sure other cars are clearer, but I am not missing much feel as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe the steering in 2wd is a little lighter? due to less wt and drive shaft having to be moving parts when steering but I didn't think the steering was 'numb' in 4wd. You can change the feel quite a bit with alignment and stiffer bits as above.

That's a good point - I need to pin / weld up my tie rods again. Might try putting some air in the tyres.
I've always felt the steering only gives feedback when pushing on but I guess with a 185mph performance envelope, not much can be expected at 30.

Try one of the new pcars (991's etc) and then you will be happy with your 993 - took a GT4 out a while back, the steering was very numb, virtually no vibrations through the wheel or the seat. Fantastic turn in though, much better, but it was hard to tell what the turn in was doing. It was bad enough that I cancelled my order (and I had a confirmed allocation).

Ahhh, I think I should have used a different word. There's plenty of feedback but a lack of precision compared to new cars.
Everyone says how converting to 2wd makes the steering feel more 'alive' and I wondered why as other manufacturers manage it?

My first Porsche test drive many years ago comprised a 997S, 993C4 Cab and a 996C2 in close succession. The 993 was my hands down favourite because of it's connection to the road in spite of it's AWD/cab disadvantage. Add the turbos and even after driving several dozen other Porsches, the 993tt remains my favourite road car.

My experience of converting to RWD only with all correct parts (inc a new end for the gearbox) turned the steering into a thing of wonder, super precise even more so than my 997GT2 (with solid joints). 993 turbo in this set up (with RS/GT2 parts) is absolutely go kart like (don't forget the -50kg helps big time in this). In comparison refitting the the 4WD loses 60% of this sharpness and feel.
Non withstanding the above I've driven standard set up 993 turbos and the steering is pretty numb IMO, fit parts from the RS/GT2 and even in 4WD it can be made into a decently sharp tool at the front end but nothing as scalpel sharp as RWD only.
Having said all the above the old chassis tech on these cars means they become a bit dangerous with over about 650NM and RWD only, the GT2 racers had massive tyres and radical geometry to keep them straight, a standard tyred/geometry 993 turbo in RWD with big torque is quite dangerous on normal cambered road, it will attempt to throw you into a hedge when the boost comes in if on a camber - see what the guy in the GT2 video on here says, it's true.
