Default 700+ whp goals.. to twin plug or not to twin plug?

I recently picked up a 993, have big plans to restore it back to it's glory.. BUT, while I make it the beautiful thing she once was, I also have a thing for speed.. so why not? Plans are to build the typical forged 3.8, maybe some 3076's or twin 6262's, flex fuel for sure on either a Motec or Proefi setup.

My main question is.. at what point do people think it's absolutely necessary to go to a twin plug setup? I've seen cars make 700 on single plugs yet I've also seen cars go twin plug at 500.. So what is everyones take on that?

TIA,

Jay

I understood that the twin plug was really for avoiding knock at highest cylinder pressure at peak torque and that the better combustion gave a lot more headroom at this point, this is for motors of up to 830NM/630hp which are thermally stable enough to endurance race.

For a drag beast type set up which is loaded for 10 secs or so (which your choice of blowers maybe alludes to ?) the twin plug may help all the way up the rev range as I guess you will be boosting the bejesus out of it

The easy answer is to say just call someone like Todd at Protomotive since they have decades of experience doing this stuff and are quite friendly answering these types of questions. I like your idea of using e85 with bigger fuel rails as I was considering it but it's tough to find at the road courses I frequent vs 110. That along with a na intake based intercooler would be a nice setup to help with the heat at these power levels. Looking at the overall build the twin plug route imho is a small fraction of the cost and I'd definitely do it. 700whp on a car with this short of a wheelbase will be a handful. Anything other than r compounds on the street and you'll do a 360 every time you floor it.

what I understood as well is that twin plugged engines don't need as much timing, which also indirectly protects against knock. Not sure if there's a hp limit when twin plug is required but would seem to make sense a twin plugged engine might be safer at the same hp.

thanks for the replies fellas, really helped a lot and i have decided to do the twin plug since i plan on going "all out" and you guys answers were a big part of that.

acropora,

yes, it will be a handful! but hopefully with me running proefi or motec, the traction control functions will help out a bit with that now my biggest issue is finding a case to begin this build with! haha thanks again guys.

Jay, give Chris Carroll @ TurboKraft a call - great guy, specialises in very big HP builds and extremely highly regarded over on the Pelican forums. He has strong opinions on twin plugging for big HP engines, through years of experience.....inadvertently demonstrated when I dyno'd my build a few months ago (although that's a long story in itself!)

I know nothing about S Car Go, but I remember the engine built for Big Bird seemed to take forever. Atan sold the car shortly there after.

Given present 993tt values, I'd consider finding a 996tt as a hp toy, keep the 993 stock....jmo

I agree all project take forever. I'm just wrapping up my standalone project after a year or so. You have to so much patience and if your not DIY ing this you will need a big pile of cash.

Sorry, but after 2.5 years I would loose interest. I can see it taking up to 1 year, but not 2.5 years.

Big Bird began as a C4S so $100k is pretty strong money for a heavily modified car like that. Yes, if they tuned it properly it is probably a monster. I wonder where it ended up?
