Mike that looks like great fun!!
They look really nice (your engine looks pretty clean too!). I bet you lost some weight as well. Are you getting a CEL with no cats?
looking forward to the vid.

Depending on what ECM map your running, you shouldn't get a "code" W/O cats. I'm not :-)

However, this big X also allows flow across the pipe to the opposite exit which is almost a straight line, and the flow is already turning before it "collides". I wanted a bit of mixing to happen just because I am vain and wanted a nicer sound. I suspect the math and analysis of the dynamics of the flow through this system would drive you nuts, and I am an engineer (electrical though) and am used to a lot of math (or was before I lost my smarts! :_ ). I bet the flow results are non-obvious. I might even be screwing it all up!

Got some video shot, it sounds much better and truer, and am going to take a few flyby shots tonight and splice together a video. Stay posted - and it ain't gonna be professional, my TIG skills are much better than my video skills.... haha.

Cheers,

Mike
Actually Mike, in pics #2 & 6, it looks like your "X-pipe" flows better (or has less chance of the pulses "head butting each other") than what's available currently. I'm sure if you took side by side equal cars, used each system, you'd find yours to be more efficient and reap more (if any) gains. Hurry up about the vid/audio clips!!!!!!!

Yes, I think Mike has trimmed down a bit LOL. I had the privilege of driving his car and it's great. The idle is, I think, perfect, with no flatulence. It's also nice in the cabin, with no drone. Aesthetically, the pipes look like "the business" peeking out beneath the rear with the nice heat-induced colour changes.

No CELS and I have been running it on the streets, and did a track day and a big autocross - but I have not fired up the PST2 to check out if any internal codes have been generated yet. I am actually surprised I have not triggered anything, and will put in cats if needed since the design has allowed for them.

Shot some video last night and editing as we speak - my damn iMAC is slower than molasses so it might take a while - and will not be professional.

Cheers,

Mike

In the future if you need cats, just let me know and I can get you just the cores so that you can fab them up how you desire.

Additionally, if you need and bends/flanges/etc. I can help you out there as well!

Yup, thanks Evan! I already have quotations from Fabspeed for a few of the HJS cats (good stuff), will come back when I need them. I did not know you sold them separately until recently so that was good news. Thanks!

Mike

Nice looking work Mike! Had I known you wanted to build pipes, I could have hired you years ago and DACH could have been kept alive I had handfuls of guys here wanting Turbo pipes, maybe you'll get them now

..........waiting for Bill Verburg to come on and poo poo your work and tell you the "X" config pipe simply can't work! It's all I ever got from him...........funny, never stopped sales and I never got an email saying my customer lost power.

Make sure to use stainless core cats when you finally install them. And most sport cat cores that you can buy on the open market are usually way more cfm capable than your motor can put out.

Best of luck,
Chris

Sounds good to me. You have a little brake squeal too

Last edited by ACEparts_com; 07-17-2015 at 01:56 PM. Reason: Brakes not breaks! I should know, I sell them!

Yah, I thought someone would notice that! Started after my last track day, might have glazed the pads and it's almost time for new disks. I don't notice it that much anyways, but funny how much it acted up when I was trying to record sound ...

Mike, I have been fabricating custom header / turbo systems for 38 years. Just happens to be the trade I ended up in. Only say that to lend validation to the following statement. That is a terrific job, all the more if it is your first time. As most know there is a very limited packaging space to try too much fancy stuff and to hit targets like the mufflers and heater ducts makes it even more challenging. Great job !!!!

Many thanks! Yah, my first one, but I think my years as a woodworker came really handy - those compound angles really requires some 3D mapping in your brain! And you are right, its really tight in there and not much room for error or clearances.

I do need to build up my TIG skills more, only started learning a few years ago. I did a lot of stick welding when I was a kid, my dad owned a sawmill and I got to help out in a lot of the repairs - learned a lot there that most kids nowadays have no clue.

Luckily, my wife is second in command a large pressure vessel fabrication shop, and when I fabricated over 100' of stainless cable railings for the house, I used a lot of FREE croppings of SS tubing from building the internals of heat exchangers. I was a really crappy welder when I started (have a tendency to run things too hot - floor the pedal!), and after many hours of practice, now less crappy. No where near a pro-level, that stuff is artistic!

If you have been doing this as a career, my hat off to you - that can some really challenging stuff!

Cheers,

Mike

Mike that sounds incredible!

And I would love to position myself in your company b/c what you have built is essentially what I have. But you actually made it?? Kudos that has to be incredible incredible satisfation. Mine was just put together with piecemeal. Finishing with the same Robin sun's.
I know I think you'll know what I mean when I say I love every aspect of it including the part at Idle where it almost sounds like an F350 diesel. Ha That may not be exactly what you want your Porsche to sound like.....but I think it's mean and it certainly doesn't sound like anything else out there...and no one without an air-cooled could reproduce it...that's what I ended up with with headers bypass and RSR's.

I have to ask you about your spacers in the back are they 1 inch?
