Guys, we all know the sunroofs are noisy b*stards over 150mph and prone to leaving the vehicle over 190mph....... do the right thing and get proper roof welded on and whilst at it ditch the gutters

As far as factory sunroof delete, some numbers from the new Turbo book (worldwide numbers, not just US) - counts include all variants and GT models.
1996 - Total worldwide 993 Turbos (inc X50 package, GT2, GTR2 ) = 3931 units
1996 - Total worldwide 993 Turbo with sunroof = 3163
1996 - Total worldwide 993 Turbos with sportseats = 1126
Percentage of Turbos in 1996 with Sunroofs = 80%
Percentage of Turbos in 1996 with Sport Seats = 29%
1997 - Total worldwide 993 Turbos (inc X50 package, S, GT2) = 2052 units
1997 - Total worldwide 993 Turbo with sunroof = 1796
1997 - Total worldwide 993 Turbos with sportseats = 574
Percentage of Turbos in 1997 with Sunroofs = 88%
Percentage of Turbos in 1997 with Sport Seats = 28%
Cheers,
Mike

When I was looking for my turbo I specifically wanted both sportseats and sunroof delete. I do track the car occasionally and wanted the extra head space wearing a helmet and I think the car looks nice without. In the long run less that can go wrong. But that was a minor consideration I admit. At the time when I bought the car I did not realize the problems reported when driving in high speed with sunroof. But then again you don´t drive at those speeds that much. Not even on the derestricted parts of the german Autobahn. That should be a non problem for most owners.
I have a sunroof in my other car and I almost never use it. I could not care less if it came without it. With that said I believe that some type of cars thats got sunroofs out of glass that makes the cabin feels more aery can be nice. But I don´t see the need to be able to open them actually. Many modern cars have bad headroom because of their sunroof solutions and sloping rear roofs. Especially in the backseat. Take the BMW 3 series or Audi A4 as an example.

Yeah, personal choice for sure. I use my sunroof just about every time I drive it, but then again is a poor man's substitue for the Targa roof I had for 10 years. I would not buy one without a sunroof, I like the fresh air and it has a better air circulation feel than the windows being open. I think the sales stats show that tendency.

have any rlisters lost their sunroof at speed? I find it hard to believe below 200 mph that it would be an issue. perhaps I am wrong about this.

Well .... not personally. But I was present at the vMax event when MOD500 lost his at somewhere around 190. The entire unit just lifted off. Very James Bond-ish. Maybe these RSTuning cars are fast after all ...

That was a factory sunroof delete, in a fashion.
The funny thing was the panel was never found; perhaps it went into orbit. MOD500's expressions after the event were pretty funny; it was a huge WTF moment at first because he didn't know what happened for a second or two except that it suddenly got very breezy and even noisier.

I love the sunroof. Use it all the time. Even cold weather, with the heater cranked.
The smallness of the 993 cabin, with the small A-pillars, seating position, combined with the rake and curve of the windshield; it's about as close to being in a cabriolet as you can get. For me, that's a plus.
