Default Do the 993 turbo engine have the same reported problems as 996 and 997 turbo engine?

Saw this thread yesterday and posted a question in that thread, but no answer yet. Guess I might as well ask the question here. Does this problem exist on older aircooled turbo engines as the 993 turbo? Or is it something that just concerns the 996 and 997 turbo owners. First time I heard of it. It seems like a unusual problem, so I would not loose any sleep over it if I owned a 996 or 997 turbo or even the 993 turbo that I own.

Here is the thread in question:

Based on my review and understanding of the porsche parts diagram, the 993 Turbo engine does not have a bolted gear on the intermediate shaft.

Put another way, PET doesn't show any bolts in that assembly. They i guess may be there, but just about every other bolt is listed, and there is nothing here.

Valve guide health is only issue that comes to mind for our engines. Start building lots of boost, other potential issues can surface.

It´s nice to hear that the 993 turbo engine does not suffer from the same problem reported. But as I said, I would not loose much sleep over it if it did. Seems like a very unusual problem that not many have heard about. The 996 turbo is more than 10 years old by now. It´s not like the normal aspired 996/997:1/Boxster engine.

What % of 997 turbo engines suffer this? Probably less than 1%, and personally I think it has a lot to do with 'tuners'' trying to squeeze more power out of it.
If you had guys trying to double the HP on a gt3, I'm sure similar problems would arise. Remember, even a cup engine needs rebuilding after 100hrs. There is a lot more to it than, 'the 997tt has an issue'. I think the thread by sharky is highlighting a problem that doesn't normally arise, rather when tuners get carried away.
993tt vs 997tt, I think the 997tt engine is superior in every way. jmo of course.

A stock 993 engine does have the bolted gear on the intermediate shaft - I just reviewed my engine rebuild pictures and its clear as day.

However, I have not rebuilt a 993 Turbo engine though so I cannot definitely conclude they are the same, but I suspect they are.

Regardless, this does not appear to be a chronic problem on the 993 Turbos, I have never read or heard of someone having this issue.

Cheers,

Mike

My guess is they are not designed to be replaced or a service item, so you buy the whole gear at one time....
