Default Looking at a TT...need a little help

Planning to look at a local 15K mile TT this weekend and need a little help. I know nothing about Turbos, so what should I watch out for specifically (outside of the mormal 993 items that I am familiar with)...what boost readings, etc??? Any advice would be appreciated

there is a good "ultimate test drive" thread if you do a search. Lists a whole bunch of stuff.

This would be a good start, I'd pick selective items from this Ultimate PPI list that your capable of looking at:

Hope it goes well, good luck!

Question: Would you walk from a seemingly perfect 993TT with 15k miles at sub $80K Cdn because the owner would not allow a compression/leakdown during PPi because of fears of possible damage to the car???

No, every case is unique.

Why would the owner think a leakdown/compression would cause damage? I know we're overprotective of our cars, but I would press the issue.

Suggest taking it to a garage the owner is comfortable with...

No way, no how would I drop $80K on a car without some assurance on what I am taking on is in good shape - and while not perfect, a compression/leakdown test is one of the best indicators of combustion chamber health.

The possible damage to the car is not any more than doing a plug change - which I guess has never been done on this car?

Its pretty well black and white to me - walk or get the test done - simple. Almost sounds like the owner is hiding something, or just does not know his stuff.

Cheers,

Mike

I wasn't going to have a leakdown done on my car because it had only 24,000 miles. This group talked me into doing so. One low reading due to a worn exhaust valve guide. The seller paid over $8,500 to have top end done. I have never followed advice that I didn't want to hear pay off so quickly. Also, think about the responses from this bunch if you don't get it down and there is a problem......Chris

I can see both sides of this. Tough call. To me, it sounds like the current owner is a little over protective. The car needs new plugs, regardless, that might be one strategy to educate the seller and get the test done.

Any potential damage is independent of the mileage - since it's not just wear you are looking for. If you missed a shift and bent a valve, that can happen at 500 miles just as easily as 50,000.

We are paying a LOT of money for a 15+ year old car, so checks are called for.

Cheers,

Mike

Mark, if this "is the one" tell the owner you'll pay for a spark plug change if he agrees to the Leakdown & Compression during the PPI. He gets a "free" spark plug change (worth over $500).

If the car fails the PPI, you walk. Or negotiate a new price and repairs.
