My guess would be that many 993 Turbo owners do a yearly oil change (a good thing for any Porsche) as preventative maintenance. They probably have low mileage cars, and thier numbers are pulling down the universal average number within Blackstone.

I'm sticking with Brad Penn 20-50 for now.
Excellent info. I'm running 50/50 now but plan to go all M1 V Twin 20w50 next change based on this...

Here is my most recent UOA on the Turbo. Just had my 6th oil change done last week.

A few notes:

1) Last five oil changes have been with Mobil V-Twin 20W50

2) 6th oil change in the past 30 months

3) Wear metals continue to decrease

4) Iron down 20%

5) Copper down significantly < 1/3 from Nov. 2009 levels

6) Lead down significantly <1/2 from Nov. 2009 levels

My engine is still breaking in after 59,000 (s)miles!

I appreciate the ongoing string, thanks for your commitment to post updates. There are so many oil threads. This one really provides proof that the Vtwin oil is a good choice for our engines.

Many thanks.

I am starting to do the same tracking, but it may take years given my one oil change/year... !

I have been blending Mobil 0W40 with the 15W50 to lower the viscosity a bit. Its probably not required but I do occasional starts near freezing temps and the ambient doesn't get over 85F here. I think I will change the 15W50 out for the V Twin 20W50 at the end of the year just to bump the Zn and P. I can be an oil geek too .

As I recall, the M1 viscosity chart indicates V Twin is good to start down to -10C. Keep in mind all the guys in Arizona and vicinity have lots of cold starts as it gets reall nippy there at night.

That's good to know about the -10 start ups, never usually hits those temps here. I have made the full transition to Vtwin too.

I've sent off my sample to blackstone as well, previous owner has been using Mobil 1 15-50 for at least 5+ years. So we'll see how the Vtwin goes, like Mike J said it's going to take some time with only annual oil changes.

Good luck finding the 20W50 V Twin in Alberta. It seems the regular retailers don't carry this anymore. I finally went to a commercial bulk dealer and paid over $15/litre! They only sell in 6 bottle cases. Maybe I'll change the oil every other year

Why don't you ship it from the US? Much cheaper even with the freight. We have the luxury of being right at the border, so most everything for the car is from the US (or does the shipping/brokerage charges kill everything?).

I'm getting ready for my next oil change... I picked up 6 V-Twin 20W-50 quarts at Autozone for $9.99 each. My plan is to blend it with the 6 quarts of M1 15W-50 I already have on hand.

I buy everything in the US. Parts are 1/2 the price, oil $9 instead of $18, etc........just make sure you use USPS/Canada Post so you don't get dinged for brokerage.

Fascinating thread! I wonder whether oil choice can/should in any way be dictated by total mileage on the car? My ride's got almost 28k documented miles on her. Is there any benefit to sticking with a more traditional oil until break-in is complete, so to say, or should I switch over to Mobile 1 TwinV 20W50 effective immediately?

I'm sure you all experienced a similar bit of momentary anxiety before switching over to a motorcycle oil, despite the support of this knowledgeable group. Just want to confirm that the TwinV 20W50 is proper for a low mileage 993TT.

What say you all to this lowly DIY grasshopper?

Your car is broken in - we are after two specific qualities which the V-Twin provides - high Zn which keeps the wear down our our camshafts and moving parts, and a high tolerance for peak temperatures, which we get in the Turbos on shutdown. V-Twin meets both of these which is why a lot of Turbo owners use it. There are other oils around that also have high Zn, but given it was designed for air-cooled motorcycles, V-Twin was designed for temperature spikes that you will get when shutting a motorcycle engine down.

There are a bit of downsides that have been discussed, since the oil requirements on a motorcycle are slightly different, but really our cars have giant motorcycle engines anyways.. LOL!

I would not worry too much about switching right now - just do it on your next oil change.

At least that is my meager understanding... :-)

Cheers,

Mike

When I bough my Turbo 2.5 years ago, it had just over 30,000 miles. Did one oil change with Mobil 15W50 and the rest have all been with V-Twin. I now have just over 60,000 miles.

Make the switch now. Good-to-go.
