Please welcome "Scarlett" to the fold!!
Well, pulled the trigger and am now a proud owner of a 1997 993 Twin Turbo, now named "Scarlett". When my wife asked if it's was exactly what I was looking for, I said damn right!
I found this car via Craigslist, and after inquiry and negotiation, settled on a price that was very reasonable, especially in the light of the falling Canadian dollar which raised the prices of importing a car by 5% or more.
Anyways, I booked TWO PPI's, one at a dealer (so they can read the computer) and the other at a local shop. There were some issues on the car, no biggies and certainly nothing that I can't handle. However, the local shop ran out of time and could not to a compression/leak down test - which I consider essential. (he also offered me a job to work on Porsches --- )
So, of course being me, I took it on myself. The owner allowed me to take the car home with a deposit (now that is TRUST!), and i put it on the list and did the compression/leak down. That was quite fun, but certainly quite a challenge as well!!
Anyways, the numbers are very good - 105 lbs. and 2% leak down (or very close, that low is hard to read off the gauge) on ALL cylinders - very even readings even after repeating the tests. To me, that is excellent news, and it means pull the trigger!!
There were some challenges around the owner buying my Targa - mostly financial. We closed the deal just in time, but it was touch and go for a while!
Not sure what is on the slippery slope - the car drives great right now. I put the RUF's on the car, and I think with Arena red they are stunning. Will just enjoy it for now.
Ok, obligatory pictures:
- 50,000 miles (80,000 km)
- No accidents, no exceptions on any reports
- Full Canadian car
- Recent rebuilt turbos, new valve cover + chain cover gaskets, clutch accumulator
- Heated sport seats
- Aluminum Parking brake and shifter
- Chrome ovals
- Silver guages

Very nice! Let me know if you ever want to sell those sport seats. I can swap you for my OEM, Classic Grey, full power, heated, Porsche crests in headrests, supple leather, plus cash. My seats were taken out at about 25,000 miles and are pretty minty.

I used a Peerless gauge that I have had for years - I had just used it on another car which showed some variations. I know it usually reads low, but I was going for consistency, not the absolute values. There can be a lot of variation of the test conditions, temperature, gauge accuracy, user technique, etc. that can cause low/high settings.
We are going to do another 993 shortly using the same gauge - that should be interesting to compare. I will also check the calibration of the gauge with compressed air later today just to see if there is an adjustment factor.
I am not sure if the Turbo should get 165 lbs on a compression test, that sounds high given its lower compression ratio. What have you witnessed vs heard?
Cheers,
Mike

Mike,
I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I've seen this done wrong on many occasions:
Do the compression check with the throttle wide open.
Great looking Arena Red car. Congrats.
