Default What's this part?

I went for a long drive today to lake Taupo (for those who know NZ) and while I was there parked up my alarm went off. I had to open the door to stop it, but it did it once more and then stopped.
I got home just before and there was a fan noise in the engine that wouldn't stop, even after an hour. I pulled the connector from the part shown and it stopped.
Whats the part? Is this common to happen/fail on the TT? It's just behind the intercooler in the middle.
The fan or whatever it is was getting hot as well.
I wonder if this is something to do with the alarm going off, voltage drop etc?
Thanks
Graham

That is the ISV or idle stabilizer valve.

Definitely should not be doing anything while the engine is off.

Why would it sound like a small fan and why won't it turn off?
It's definatley the part that seems to be making the noise.

honestly i haven't the slightest clue.

All it does it provide a route for air to bypass the throttle body to keep the idle steady and keep it from stalling.

shouldn't be doing a damn thing with the engine not running.

have you had your engine harness replaced?

Are you sure it wasn't the fresh air blower on the left side of the engine compartment?

And a wild thought - if it was the ISV then there's something strange going on - it shouldn't be energised when the engine's off. So the wild thought is this - do you have water ingress into the car that is collecting under the seats causing issues with the alarm and DME?

It did hose down all the way there and back, about 300 miles I guess.
But the other day the car was up and down a bit on the idle, so I pulled the ISV now I know what it is, and just cleaned it out. I will put it back in soon.
I agree it might have just been too much water somewhere. It was pretty torrential at times. No water inside though.
It's a BMW part as well. Cheats.

Update on this.
I cleaned the ISV and put it back. the idle was perfect.
As for the alarm, I think the newly discovered fish pond under the carpet front and rear might have had something to do with it. It also probably had something to do with the whirring sound that appeared to come from the ISV.
Looks like the new windscreen that was installed on Friday wasn't sealed properly.
I know they reused the inside rubber which I think might be the problem.
Typical. But at least I have a clean ISV now
