Default CaliperRefurbishment

I finally got the supplies together and repainted the calipers and rotor hats as per previous discussions on this forum. Thanks for all the information everyone has provided. Duplicolor cleaner/caliper paint/lacquer, Rustoleum hammered aluminum look rotor hat paint. There is still some to be skimmed off the rotor by the brakes and some little touchups in the fall when wheels come off again.
New alloy centercaps from Pelican Parts.
Next.... Marcus Buehler's CF bits arrived yesterday...

I post these pics as a motivator for those who have contemplated doing this, but didn't get around to it. I am glad to not be looking at pink, flaky calipers, rusty hats and flaking plastic center caps anymore!

for the hats do you need to do any sanding or just clean and paint? do you tape the rotors up?

I just taped the edge of the rotors near the hats to keep major contamination off, but left some rotor exposed, to allow painting to the edge, since the brake pads will skim off excess. There are a couple of little spots that I could have covered better, but the paint dries with a really nice dimpled finish.
I sprayed hats with brake cleaner, while cleaning the calipers, and just used a wire brush to clean them up. It cleans up very easily and quickly compared to calipers. I put two coats on hats, no lacquer.

Looks good! Marcus sells some great stuff.

Here's a tip, to keep your wheels, rotors, hats, and calipers cleaner, use your your leaf blower to dry 'em, after you wash the Turbo.

Easier to just drive it after the wash...

.....and throw the dirty water from the cross drilled rotors everywhere? That just makes a bigger mess, in my experience. The leaf blower is so easy. Takes me longer to take out and put away the the 30 foot extension cord, than the actual drying time with the blower. And I can keep the front air intakes clean.

looking good! nice job polishing the inside of the rims too! I've got to do this soon, my calipers are pink. thanks for the post and keep us updated with those CF bits! Leaf blower sounds like a good idea to me, hate those streaks that I have to keep cleaning after washing.
