Default faint computer display

I have noticed a faint computer display over the last couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions to remedy this? Thanks in advance. - Glenn

If there are digital segments missing, it is a complicated mess to repair with no assurance that the fix will take. A dim display with no missing segments could be some small light bulbs that have burned out and a much simpler fix.

Hi Glenn,
If you are happy with a soldering iron and comfortable taking the steering wheel off then you can fix this. if not, take it to a garage and they will replace the tach, or if you are lucky, just the bulb that back lights the OBC display.

If its not the bulb, then you will have to take the tach out and apart and perform some diy component replacement and soldering. I have attached a document that shows the common components which you can replace. I did this and it did not fix the problem for me. In the end, I ran another wire from a permanent 12v feed on the circuit board in the tach to the back light bulb which means that my OBC display is always back lit. I am happy with this because it means you can see it all the time.

cheers Taj.

Thanks for the responses guys. There is nothing wrong with the display other than it is very difficult to see because the light is so weak. I think I will wait until the spring and then have it looked at. Hopefully it will be easy to fix. Taj - Very informative - Thanks for all the trouble you went to.

with only 15k miles I would be suprised if the bulb is burnt out. Is it dim with lights on as well?

Mine is dim too. Bulb is fine. Hollywood speedo will fix for $500. Not really worth it to me.

The Hollywood guy told me that voltage spikes, like a jumpstart, will cause it to go dim. It is very sensitive.

I just tried turning on the lights without the engine running and I could not read the computer display.

When the OBD display on Waldo went dim, it was just the bulb. Remove the steering wheel, pull the tach out, replace the bulb. Easy fix.
