^^ These are decisions we all get to make for ourselves. But if it was me, given your concerns, I'd ship the car and put the 3000 miles on a track somewhere back here instead of on I-80, or whatever the I of your choice is.

Default Consider shipping

I would seriously look into the transport of the car.

For some folks they look forward to the journey home but in your case it's sounds like not so much. Usually when you figure the cost of the flight, the cost of the fuel, the cost of the food and lodging and your time off work. You most likely will not save any money. Now imagine all the possibilities like break downs in some hole in the wall town like Green River, Utah. The closest Porsche dealer would be Denver, nearly four hundred miles away. I realize that you aren't going through Utah, but there are plenty of desolate area's on your route.

At least check into it.

Here's a check list of what's with the car to ensure your trip is safe:

Wheel lock is in the air compressor case.
There are three jacks with the car.
Tools in the toolbag are in the trunk.
There is a DME relay and flashlight in the glove box.
There is a microfiber towel in the trunk in case you have to rinse the car.
Spare tire has never been used (not by me at least).
I have two quarts of Mobil1 15w50 in a plastic bag I'll put in the trunk.
The wipers (front and rear) are like new but I have never used them (honestly I don't even know where to turn them on).
All exterior lights work.
The front license plate is in the trunk.

David set me up well! Many thanks.

I spent just under $200 for gas during the 1545 mile trip, two day trip (21+ MPG). I brought cash, my AAA card, a GPS, a Valentine One, and books on CD.

My flight was $200, the hotel in El Paso was $65 (Priceline) food/coffee was $40 and gas $200. So, tad over $500 plus my time. For me, it was the best choice.

In Texas the speed limit is 65 at night on the 10. If you do 70 MPH you may never get out of the State.

If you're going to take spare belts take the special tri-square bit required to hold the alternator shaft - that tool is not going to be in every mechanic's toolbox.

And it "may" be in your car's tool bag. I always ensure that there is one in my tool bag.

My dad once got "stranded" in Crested Butte CO because of a broken alternator belt. Belt got old and broke on a Friday night. Mechanic ordered a new belt on Saturday to arrive on Monday. Then he realized that he didn't have the tool. Dad didn't get back on the road until Wednesday as a result. Now he carries spares.

How can you suggest transporting rather than driving. You only live once. This kind of a trip is what makes life worth while.

+1 on driving over transporting. I learned the "carry a spare DME relay" the hard way driving my previous P-car back from FL.

I did look into it. I'd have to fly out there anyway, so thats a wash.

Gas, I figure 10 tanks at $60 per, so $600 in gas, 3 nights in hotels at $100 per, and maybe $200 in food.

$1100 for the drive, the shipping would be at least $2k, and could take quite a while.

My bad. I forgot about the DME Relay.
Seriously though, when picking up a new car you never know what unexpected things may crop up. It's different than driving a car that you know intimately a long way.

And yes it is depressing driving across central Texas and realizing you ain't gonna make it out of the state that day!

I get "stranded" in CB once or twice a year - it's a cross I have to bear.

Just fyi instead of using a funnel, my dealer installed some kind of accordion like tubing that I pull halfway out of the oil filler neck to fill then push back in when done.
Fix a flat?
GL on your trip.

I forgot to bring most of these.

I flew from Canada to Phoenix and drove a newly purchased and highly modified 993TT 2,150 miles home over three days.

I had with me a V1 and GPS, to find my way and verify any top speed runs. FYI 262 mph that time..lol

Car did not miss a beat, it is a Porsche you know.

there is a chance I underestimated the reliability of the 993TT. I was under the impression that it was not a terribly reliable car, and I was ok with that.

mine has the same...I believe that is the way these cars came, although I could be wrong. even with the accordian, the funnel is helpful.

Blue tape or something like this if you plan to do the cover up multiple times.

http://www.surfacearmor.us/

Doesn't come in "small' rolls though. No affiliation and other sites also sell "car wrap".

Enjoy the ride home :-)
