No kidding.

+1 on what Steve says and I should have clarified that you should get one of those funnels that's about 18" long. I don't think a regular funnel will reach where it needs to.

Here's a list I generated for Chuck W. for his 1545 mile trip from Corpus Christi TX to Los Angeles CA.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Here's a check list of what's with the car to ensure your trip is safe:

Wheel lock is in the air compressor case.
There are three jacks with the car.
Tools in the toolbag are in the trunk.
There is a DME relay and flashlight in the glove box.
There is a microfiber towel in the trunk in case you have to rinse the car.
Spare tire has never been used (not by me at least).
I have two quarts of Mobil1 15w50 in a plastic bag I'll put in the trunk.
The wipers (front and rear) are like new but I have never used them (honestly I don't even know where to turn them on).
All exterior lights work.
The front license plate is in the trunk.

Have a great trip. You will remember it always.
Well, why not bother with the tape? I don't see a reason to mark the entire front of the car up needlessly within the first 5 days of ownership, ya know? I'm imagining in the more desert like states there will be a lot of stones just waiting to tear up the car. I'm not a concours guy by any stretch, but I would like to keep it nice.

As for the speedlimit thing, I hope to use the cruise control extensively. I've kinda gottem the speeding thing out of my system by now, so I'm hoping I'll behave myself.

Thanks, I will take lots of pictures.

You know, I was kinda wondering about that, and I'll look for a long funnel. Excellent info gents.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
But take the Ipod.
Funny really, these cars are worth mega bucks yet sometimes we assume there might be a problem. Why? I never take anything when I go for a road trip. DME only.
Have fun though.

well, better to prepare for the worst than to be unprepared and chuck a fan belt into the tumble weeds in the middle of nevada.

I'm a planner...what can I say.

Thanks for the input gentlemen.

good luck on the no speeding thing:> I don't think you will get many stone chips doing 65 mph, however.
in case you don't know, you must have the car running and warmed up when adding oil.
Dland: why are there 3 jacks?

^^ Guess I have to agree with ScottMellor. I just made a four day SF-NYC trip in an MB a few weeks ago. I did add an i-pod but that's it. It's not like you're traveling through Mongolia. But ... your results may vary, etc.

Walther p99? He needs this: American Made, Wilson Combat "Stealth". Great personal defense instrument. That's what I carry when I'm traveling. Yes, I have a concealed weapons license.

Dan,
Thanks. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to keep the speed under control. Stone chips hopefully won't be an issue, but no harm in plopping the tape on. Did know that about the oil, but thanks for looking out.

Mongolia, no, but rural parts of the US can be just as hostile. 100 degrees, tumbleweeds, nobody around for miles, etc. I guess I tend to view MB as more reliable, ore at least less likely to have major drivetrain issues. We are talking about 13 year old cars with almost 70k miles, so better safe than sorry.

Cheers.

A nice firearm would be great, but no gun permits here.

I understand these rural parts of America, having made the coast to coast drive more than a half a dozen times over the past 40 years, in cars far less reliable than a 993. And the MB was almost 10 years old with almost 60k miles. Sure you believe you bought the right car for this trip?

Quite frankly, no I'm not. I know that the 993TT is the car for me, but 3000 miles in 4 days for any car is tough.

I wish I didn't have to make the trip really. I love to drive, but its really far, and being a car I'm not familiar with, I'm 100% paranoid about the car breaking.

That said, I have no interest in flying to CA, concluding the deal, and flying back, and then having the car shipped back, so I don't have a ton of choices.

Chances are all will be ok, but I'm going to be extremely cautious.
