Default lower valve cover leak question.

dealer fixing a lower valve cover leak tomorrow.

this is probably a silly question, but i am wondering if this leak can effect performance/compression in any perceivable way? 55k, have had the leak for a while haven't noticed anything negative–car drives great, proper boost in third etc.

however, this being the only 993tt I have ever driven maybe my "great" is not as good as it should be, if that makes any sense...

any thoughts much appreciated.

No it won't arrect the performance of the car. Just a smelly mess. Put the billett covers on. The stock plastic warp. http://fdmotorsports.net/index_files/Page2771.htm

Default Valve leak

and are the doing the 2 to 3 hour version that it should take or are they taking you to the cleaners and charging the factory recommended 10 to 12 hour version (both are the same).

This is actually one of the best tests on how good your mechanics actually is

I've had no problems with the plastic ones on either my 993 or 964. Had to replace the gaskets but they're nice and dry. I have heard of leak hassles with the billet ones.

wallet gonna be lighter no doubt: dealer charging 1600 for the 60k service, 1000 for both lower valve covers + gaskets. keeping the car two days starting this a.m.

Plan to bring the car to Kevin at UMW for the stage 1 kit in the spring, was hoping to save this work until then, mileage wise it didn't work out.

Kevin at UMW and I had a long discussion about billet valve covers when he rebuilt my turbos earlier this year. He is concerned about additional heat retained versus plastic. I went ahead with the Hargett lower covers, but he gave me pause.

I could do one lower valve cover gasket by myself in two hours. That includes taking off the turbo to get to it. Here is a hint though It not BE a valve cover it could be your turbo going and leaking. I lost both my turbos at 48K miles first indication was look of a valve cover oil leak.
The gasket repair is probably a 5 on the scale of hardness for a weekend mechanic.

checking the oil is pretty much the scope of my confidence and ability; porsche dealers love me for that. yeah i assumed it was a turbo myself after reading kevin's sticky. had the lower valve cover diagnosis a few months back. MAN i love your GT3 haven't seen one in that that color before.

Chance make sure that they check your chain housing seals. This is also a very common place that oil leaks and runs down the stainless heat shield.

The Aluminum valve covers aren't my idea of the perfect fix. The will conduct heat and pass it right into your hydraulic rockers assy. Plastic valve covers have worked for 50 to 80K. I usually tell people that they are good for two gasket replacements. After that, toss them and buy new factory plastic covers.
