If that really is the market clearing price, then there are a lot of overpriced cars out there (e.g., NA cars with 2x the miles for not much less)...and the automotive asset class has not held up as well as I hoped.

From a far I looked at this car several times, carfax, autocheck, seller's description. There was reported damage to the front end on the car fax. The dealer glossed over this by saying some "paint-work" up front. Additionally, it concerned me that there was not any history to go along with the vehicle. I have been looking for months for the "right" 993tt and this was just not it. However, at $52k someone has plenty of room to do whatever may be needed. I do not think this is indicative of a very well kept vehicle with low or moderate mileage. I could however be very wrong, wouldn't be the first time and probably won't be the last. I hope that it turns out to be the steal of the century for someone though.

November Pano asking prices indicate a firm market, the following were offered.
1996 27K 85,000
1996 29K 74,500
1997 n/a 64,995
1997 n/a 69,900
1997 24K 79,900
1997 74K 55,000
I would take a higher mileage car with history over a lower mileage one without for the same price.

The same dealer also sold 2 996TT's last week for very low $40K's. I suspect either a "fire sale" of everything or some shill bidding. It's very surprising that all 3 cars had been listed for weeks and all sold within days of each other.

many predict the car market to continue in a spiral for some time. probably cutting their losses. tough times.

In many "no reserve" auctions the seller buys it back. This may have happened here. If so, somebody may have missed a steel. However, I also would not buy a no history car.
