I think that prices have been relatively stable. Over time, the cars are the market have higher and higher miles, and miles lower the price. You didn't have a lot of cars with 80k miles 4 years gao. Those cars are <50k now. But the car with 10k miles has been 80-90k for years (+/-). Miles cost you. The differential between high mile cars and low mile cars is larger primarily because the low mile cars are still <10k miles, while the "high" mile cars are now 60-80k miles, and they used to be 30k miles. I'd argue that in every year since about 1996, the price of a 993TT (in great condition for its miles) can be roughly approximated by $100k-miles. For those so inclined, you might use 100-miles^.9 instead. It is pretty much independent of what year you are talking about. It is just that the cars, on average, have more miles every year.

Miles 100-miles 100-miles^.9
0 100 $100
10 90 $92
20 80 $85
30 70 $79
40 60 $72
50 50 $66
60 40 $60
70 30 $54
80 20 $48

I am not saying it is precise, or that miles are the only factor. Plus, I am talking about asking prices for the best examples at dealers with good reps. My primary point is that the differential between high and low miles cars has grown because the number of miles on so-called high mile cars is higher every year, while the low mile cars barely go up in mileage. So, anyone who is driving their car and is dismayed to see their price drop while the car with 5k miles is not dropping I hope will agree that the drop is, at least in part, if not wholley, due to the new miles being put on, not the number of miles the car had to begin with. The garage queen with 5k had better outperform in percentage and absolute dollars when being compared to a car that continues to rack up more miles.

Do you think this formula is more or less true 5 months later? How long has this line of thinking been around?

Pretty close. For asking prices on all-original cars with clear histories.
