Default undertray comes loose - loss of boost.

Anyone got an idea what this could be:

My engine undertray comes loose at high speed yesterday and I pull over after about 200 yards.
The tray is damaged badly so I take it off completely for the trip home. Everything seems fine underneath.

I start the car back up and head off - but... now there's no boost at all, the boost guage indicates 0.0 bar and I can tell immediately there's nothing. I flatten the throttle and eventually at about 4000rpm I start to hear a quite loud whistling sound... though still no real power (still indicates 0.0).

Obviously somethings happened but damned if I know - any ideas?

Check the hoses going from the turbos to the intercooler; perhaps one has come loose. It's possible that the flailing undertray damaged one of them. There's a very slight outside chance that one of the turbo actuator waste gate rods is bent and has jammed the wastegate opened but it would be very unlikely for that to happen to both.

Get the car checked out before you put any more miles on it.

Thanks Felix - I'll check both these things out before I go back to Strasse.

I managed to get a look at both the actuators under the car and they looked ok but must admit I was struggling to get a proper look.

Yes it was a hose, thanks guys. The tray had sliced a hose open as it came loose at 140mph!

Pitch the tray it is unnecessary.

I used mine for a sled in the snow.

I think you should use this experience as an excuse to get bigger turbos!

pretty surprise these fragile fiber glass made undertray can do such a damage to those hoses
if you have seen the hose you'll know how thick and hard it is!

kennyboy, I think I have a set of hoses in the garage, they were off my 96 car so are all black, not the orange ends.

Any use to you?

Mine's a 97, and the original ones didn't have the orange bands on them either, I think those are reinforced at their ends to fix the weakness in the first place. I recall the new set costing about 450 for the pair or something like that. Also pick up some beefier hose clamps from turboclamps or somewhere.

Everyone seems to deal with these, they are 10 years old and the IC has probably been off a few times by now. Probably time to replace them.

Hey thanks Perry - I'm sorted now, I got some new ones fitted for free by Strasse. It was their fault the tray came loose as they hadn't fixed it on properly - they also got me new tray FOC.

drgn2phnx - yeah it suprised me too, though hell knows what went on down there at such high speed, perhaps I'm lucky nothing else was broken.

Quick Reply: undertray comes loose - loss of boost.
