Unhappy Boost Gauge reads 0.1-0.2 at idle...

So, TT ownership is great but... can you help me with these small issues (which may be mundane... or may not)

1.) Since some (fairly) hard driving in town (stop-start hard acceleration) my boost gauge reads 0.1 to 0.2 bar at idle and almost never reads 0.0. Indeed sometimes (with no discernable change in engine revs) it goes from 0.1 to 0.2 when at idle and watching the gauge.

2.) Also the engine oil level gauge stays on red (at maximum bottom) while driving but rises to anywhere between half-full at rest to three-quarters if standing for a few minutes. (I have checked the dip and oil is 4/5ths full.)

3.) Finally, when I first start (in the morning) the brake pressure warning light stays on for 30 seconds or so then never reappears again. (Brake fluid also at max in the reservoir.)

Any help greatly appreciated. (Pics will be posted on the 993 board soon for anyone interested). <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />

1.) Apart from the possibility of a couple of causes which I am not that acquainted with, go here for another possibility-
<a href="http://www.911turbo.com/turboclub/board/board.php?messageID=7978" target="_blank">First Link</a>
Then go here
<a href="http://www.911turbo.com/turboclub/board/board.php?messageID=8008" target="_blank">Second link for a reason</a>
Just a theory but to check if it is the above reason, insert key, turn key but not all the way and do NOT engine-start. Do this a few times and you might see the erroneous boost display BEFORE engine start. I suspect that this would indicate a higher likelihood of your car doing what is described in links above. Not sure at ALL though. Just thought I'd throw this in. Also, I hope you are achieving max boost of 0.8 when appropriate.

2.) Pretty normal behaviour and indicating that your car has slightly more oil than needed. Best to try for an oil level firmly in the middle of the curly part of dipstick matched with a corresponding gauge indication showing needle at 3 o'clock. You get this optimal reading if you have the right amount of oil and ONLY when car has
a) run for about 45 minutes
b) been parked on level ground
c) attained temp. indication on gauge at 8 o'clock minimum AND
d) been idle for one minute
At most other times and especially when on the go, the indicator is in the red.

3.) That indication seems normal. Mine stays on for about 15/18 seconds I think.

Ran - thanks for the tips. I am much relieved to hear about your experience with the oil and the brake pressure.

The mystery still remains as to the bar reading... thanks for the links tho' I reckon that it is not a case of intermittently losing all connection (and thus causing a crazy reading) but instead somehing that would allow a variable reading of some pressure (between 0.1 to 0.2 bar) while at idle.

Any other theories?! Anyone?!

Thanks again for responding so soon Ran, it'll help me sleep easier on my secong day of ownership!

I have notice similar with the boost pressure but not at idle but at hardly any throttle opening.

The brake warning light does exactly the same thing as yours.

Agree with others that 2) and 3) are normal.

About 1) - when u say idle do u mean the car is stationary (if so have no idea as to reason) or do u mean car moving along in gear at around 1,000 rpm? If the latter then I think this is normal - especially if in a higher gear where the smallest flex of your big toe on the accelerator will lead to a boost reading.

I started the car this evening and got a .1-.2 boost reading on tick-over with car stopped. As soon as I moved off it dropped to zero. I'm not sure there's a problem here as I wonder just how accurate the guage really is. On the older turbos with the analog boost guage, it used to flutter pretty wildly and would also sometimes move slightly indicated slight boost even if the car was not moving. I think the analog guage makes this more obvious.

When I said idle I meant stationary and foot off the gas... equally it does it when decelerating under engine braking and foot off the gas...

My 1996 993tt also sometimes shows 0.1 or 0.2 bar even when coasting with my foot off the gas - there is NO positive pressure in the inlet tract in this case! I just think the guage is almost worthless - esp. with the 0.8 bar maximum reading. I guess the only thing it does show you is when the car is limited to 0.5 bar when it believes there is something wrong.

I had the problem of the digital boost gauge registering 0.1-0.2 bar at idle or when the engine is off. Dealer replaced the boost sensor under warranty and the problem dissapearred.

PramTT is correct--boost sensor is going bad, eventually it will not function and put car in limp mode limiting boost under load conditions.

As for items #2 and #3, both are perfectly normal.

I had the same experience as Pram, I believe their are two sensors that could be changed. The one on the top of the engine in the rear (by intercooler) has been prone to be bad from getting weathered (rain, water, etc.). My dealer replaced another boost sensor, but I don't know which one and now the guage is much slower to react than in the past. The guage when it read 0.1-0.2 bar at idle use to respond corresponding with the pressure on my right foot, but with this new guage, there is actually a decreased response time and the guage will not respond for a good couple of seconds. I wonder if this is normal?

Cheers,
