Post updated engine mounts

I saw the posts over at the 993 board about upgrading the engine mounts to the RS, or RSR, or Solid mounts.

Any turbo owners done this?

If not, anybody want to be the guinea pig?? ( viperbob, you said you were looking for a new project, didn't you?? )

The engine doesnt move around as much with them installed. I also have delrin mounts for the tranny so that the rear doesnt flex as much.

Under power, with these changes the rear just plunks down. There isnt as much side to side motion. Mind you, my car is more powerful than stock, but, they will help out on a stock car also.

Wow this is weird Jeff. I was actually just reviewing that posting and printed out the part numbers. I was going to call Crescent Porsche and see what kind of price they have on these parts. I was then going to compare these prices to the solid mounts at the Racers Group.

I'll let you know what I come up with.

Victor, any effect on NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels on your car after the solid mounts? Let me know.

Bob, could you let us know what kind of prices you come up with on these mounts and if you do decide to have them in how they compare to the stock mounts both in terms of improvements as well as downside, i.e loss of refinement etc.?

cheers guys,
Kris

Krish,

It was too late to get prices tonight, but will get them tomorrow. If you do the solids, you need to also do the tranny (pain). If you do the RSs, then you can just do the engine mounts.

Also, I recommend the Denon AVR5802, with a Pioneer Elite Big Screen HD setup. Not top-top of the line, but pretty good. Got them at the Crazy Eddie in New York. You will not find anyplace cheaper than these guys. All factory warranties too. See, if you save a little here then you will have more for the car....

Hi Bob,
Thanks for that link! Man, I can't believe the prices there! Have bookmarked them! That Denon sounds interesting....

I'm actually thinking of upgrading just my speakers. I currently have a B&W setup (603s, 602s and 601s). My subs are 15" drivers from Adiva audio with homebuilt enclosures. Have been eyeing a setup of active speakers from Avant Garde (Solos') but at approx. $4,500.00 each it's going to be a long wait. And it's going to be longer if i keep coming back here to this forum....

Sorry for being OT guys ...

cheers,
Kris

I agree with the denon recievers but a higher model please at least. concerning subs come on velodyne only! Separates with B&W are cool though.

Denons' for the girlfriend. I have a Lexicon driving 3 amps, 5 channel Rotel (rears, sides and center), 2 channel Rotel (fronts) and a 2 channel Pro amp (1000 watts RMS) for the subs. Velodyne??? Real men build their own subs !!

cheers,
Kris

Krish,

I was just trying to save you some money so you can put it where it really belongs, in your Porsche... If you have that kind of a great system already, I think it is only right that you start ordering your 3.8 or 4.0L Turbo upgrade to keep your car on the same par as your AV system. Real men rebuild their own turbos

I didn't really notice any increase in harshness.. Mind you I am already running H&R Coilovers. The car is pretty low as it is. There is no additional noise or vibration at all. I believe there are 4 mounts in the rear for the engine and frame and 2 for the tranny.

It really takes the sloppiness away from the car when it accelerates and when it is cornering hard.

Victor,

The engine just uses 2 mounts, and the transmission just has one press fitted in the very front of the housing.

Well I know there are 2 of those solid mounts (1 on either side of the car) which is visible from the wheel well.. I thought there were 2 in the engine bay as well?

Also, for the tranny I remember I was told that 2 delrin pieces were fitted to replace the factory rubber pieces? 1 piece was set far back close to the engine. The other piece I thought was forward of that??

Now you have me curious.. I have to get under my car and have a look.. I'll get back to you on that...

Victor,

Think you are looking at the top and bottom of the same engine mount.

Krish,

Prices for the RS mounts with all of the associated hardware is approx. $320 at Crescent Porsche (List is about $440). Also the part number for the mount is listed incorrectly in the posting on the 993 board. Correct part number for the mount is 964.375.043.80. They would have to check stock in Atlanta on all the parts, yadda-yadda-yadda. So I decided to try the solid mounts as these were under $300 at Racers Group. This is one day UPS ground for me so I will have them installed on Saturday (along with my cruise control cable that only took 4 months to get here from Germany). Am not doing anything on the tranny at this point. Ryan said most people don't bother with this mount as it is a pain. Well see how it goes.

That's always my main concern, introducing a mod that makes the car too harsh to drive on the street. There was a time when I had full race suspension with 320 deg cams and straight pipes on my street cars. But it's a case of been there and done it. In my advancing years I'm getting used to comfort. What you have experienced is good to know and based on your and Bobs info above I think I'll be going with the RS mounts.

OK, so I got the solid engine mounts from the Racer Group (they are anodized blue so they match my other solid mounts). But they didn't send a bolt to mount the stupid thing. The factory mount has a stud installed that actually holds the engine, so a bolt will be required in order to do the install. They say that they just supply the mount and I have to get the rest. They could not even tell me the size I need.

Now after some measurements, I am supposed to find an M12x70mm with a 1.5 pitch (fine thread) in at least a 10.9 hardness. I'm sure my local Napa will have these in stock. NOT.

Why can't these people make this stuff easy for us? I just don't understand... I'll post an update after the great bolt hunt.
