Ouch. I will surely be plagued with nightmares after seeing that.
The related posts state that a grass fire was ignited by his cats after he spun off the course.

Grass fires are pretty common at some tracks. I was at Thunderhill (Sacremento Valley) last year with the Viper club when a car went off the course and started a fire. The car was ok, but they had to stop the event and put out the fire. It burned several acres before they were able to get it under control. They had good fire fighting equipment at the track because of the fires from cars going off the track. 100+ temps for a few months with no rain at all will do it I guess.

Rest easier Scott, you have the Cat bypass pipes so your car so should be in good shape... That coupled with the fact that since it is your second event, you are better than last time so you'll be sure to stay on the track (there are also not too many spots at Button Willow where going off is an issue).
Have fun down there and take LOTS of water to stay hydrated...

Are you sure it wasn't the turbos that caught it on fire? Those get pretty hot too. Either way that is a shame, I wonder if he could have driven out of the area before the damage to the car started.

The sad thing is, this could've easily been avoided if the driver had a fire extinguisher on board and had the hindsight to make sure his car wasn't on fire before it was too late.

Scott,
Not too much to worry about with grass fires at buttonwillow. Sagebrush, maybe.
My friend rolled his SVT Contour at Buttonwillow a few years back. It was a very cold track, he was on new (for him) R compounds, and there was thick, gooey mud at the edge of the track. He did a slow slide on the downhill side of Magic Mountain, hit the edge, and the car rolled over... ever so slowly. USAA paid for the repairs, and did not drop him as a client.
Have fun, but be safe.
Oh yeah, I always have to add my official HWFM Racing slogan: "SLOWDOWN, GODDAMMIT!"

Would make someone a nice a fixer, definitely going to install a fire extinguisher by the
foot area of the passenger seat.
Buttonwillow is one place you don't want to go
off roading, I bent my front spindle when I went
off at the long back sweeper during a SCCA race
school, the begining of the school was wild, cars
going off in every turn dust clouds everywhere,
got so bad that it was red flaged and the instructors gave a good tongue lashing to all
of us. Excuse me for ramblings.
