Post 993TT oil change

I have a question for you guys, how much should an oil change be for a 993TT. I got quoted about $175-$200 from aPorsche dealer and about $200 from an independent shop. Does this sound right

The price sounds right, but you can do it yourself for 1/4 of the price if you want to. Check out www.p-car.com and go to the DIY pages for step by step directions.

Just make sure that you use the correct oil filter for the engine, a Porsche filter, not Mahle. I used a Mahle, had smoking issues replaced with another Mahle, still smoked at start up and the left side turbo res. contained way more oil than the opposing side.

Tried a "Porsche" filter and guess what, the problem went away.

I was ready to (needlessly) replace the turbos.

I just had the oil changed in mine. Over the last few days I had an oil puddle under the car and it turns out that the seam of the lower filter had let go and was spraying oil out. It was a Porsche filter.

AC, the hardest part about changing your own oil is 1) lifting the car up on all 4 jack stands and 2) removing the old engine filter. Get you one of those 3 finger spring type universal filter wrenches. I went through several filter cap type wrenches trying to remove the old filter. The tank filter is easy, just make sure you have all the required plug seals, etc. and a large oil drain pan. I don't have a dealer near by, so ordered filters, seals from Pelican and bought Mobil 1 oil (15-50) from Wal-Mart. Total costs excluding my labor, about $95.

AC and Paul,

You can get a oil filter socket/wrench designed specifically for the factory oil filters from a Porsche dealership for about $7. I purchased mine from Phil Anderson at Suncoast Porsche in Sarasota. Makes removing the filters a breeze.

Mercedes dealers also have the same filter socket cap. No Porsche dealer seemed to have it near me, but the Mercedes dealers did. Go figure...

Thank you everyone for your advise and help.

I decided to take the car to the P-Car dealer, because I still have about a month of warranty left on the car. I took the car in over the weekend (Jack Daniel Porsche Paramus, NJ) to get the oil changed and it cost about $200. I took it in so that they can check the whole car over, and it pass with flying colors. The only thing they saw was a missing lug, which I had in my possession because I wanted to order a polished set, other than that the car didn't need anything else done (knock on wood). I will try to do the next oil change myself. Thanks again

I was curious about what a DIY oil change really costs me, so I added up recent receipts (Porsche parts from Phil Anderson at Suncoast Porsche, 941-923-1700):

- 993.107.203.03 oil filter $8.26
- 993.207.201.02 large oil filter $13.22
- Two 900.123.118.30 alum seal rings, $0.47 ea x 2 = $0.94
- Two 5-quart jugs of Mobil-1 15W-50, purchased a while back at Wal-Mart, $17.80 ea x 2 = $35.60

So, total is $58.02.

Money saved over going to dealer = about $140.

Time spent bonding with my car and exposing my skin to carcinogens = priceless.

I got mobil 1 oil myself and brought it to the shop. They charged me 45 dollars to the labor. Total came to about 100 dollars.

I have a 964 turbo not a 993

Since the oil change last week I have developed a problem. The car is now smoking heavy on cold start up, fills the garage full of smoke.
I found out that the shop installed 10w-40 mobile 1, so first thing they are going to change to the recomended weight and see if that makes a change. I guess we see what happens from there.

Pete,

I'd check to make sure they didn't overfill the oil. Also, did they use Porsche factory oil filters? I've seen reports of problems with alternative filters on this board.

Don't forget: A bit of smoke filling the garage on cold start-up, particularly if the car has not been run for a few days, is not necessarily abnormal. However, it should clear after a minute or two.
