Post check engine light question

I was driving a low mileage 993tt and the check engine light came on.

What is the cause of this?

Some have told me this is a common problem with the 993tt and almost should be ignored.

Thoughts?

The check engine light should NOT be on, unless the owner has done some engine modifications that are causing the problem. The car should be checked out with a code scanner to try to determine the root of the problem. If this is a car you are thinking of buying, it is very important to get to root cause, and get it corrected. Sometimes the problems are trivial, and sometimes they are serious.

Is there a guide to all of the symbols on these cars? for example, what does the yellow exclamation point indicate?

Thanks for the constructive answer.

You can safely assume that I don't have an owners manual (or car) or I would have looked it up myself.

In the same time that you could have answered it, you chose to be rather rude. Please don't assume you are inherently smarter than everyone you deal with, or if you are, just chose not to respond and leave it to someone more sympathetic.

Is the exclamation point yellow? Hmmm... I thought mine is red, but I don't see it very often. I believe this is used a a "flag" that a new warning condition has occured. It can be as simple as a "low fuel" light, or can be the dreaded "CEL". In any event, there is a similar exclamation point symbol on one of the rocker switches near the gearshift. That will reset the "flag" light, but not the warning light.

OK, it was the low fuel indicator then as that light was on.

In my E55, I get the same prominent exclamation point, but that indicates I have turned my ASR off.

Many thanks for the answer, btw.

Whatever.

But understand that the owner's manual is about as basic as you can get, much like when someone asks why there car isn't running properly, and you kindly suggest that they make sure they have inserted the key into the ignition.

There isn't much way to intepret that other than being rude.

FYI - a lot of folks do not read the owners manual. Others do - and forget that info is contained in that manual that they are asking for in these Forums.....

Midwest

I didn't get an owners manual with my car either. I was able to get any owners manual and service manual from My-porsche.com. I could not understand why it didn't come with the car but the one I got was brand new. They also have shop manuals if you are so inclined.

You are 100% right - "the owner's manual is about as basic as you can get" as you say. The exclaimation warning light is exactly what one would expect...something is not quite right with the car and needs your immediate attention (hence the exclaimation symbol <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" /> ). This could be low gas, seat belt unbuckled, top not closed, low batter, alternator problem, etc....to expect someone to provide you with a full and comprehensive list of EVERYTHING that it could possibly be warning you about is a bit too much to expect...you might as well ask for someone to quote the manual for you

I know Jeff and I can say rude is not a word that I would relate to him in any fashion. He has gone out of his way to help people on this board many times. For example, without having ever met me in person, Jeff came to my home to help with a DIY project. E-mail and other written forums (such as this) can be easily misunderstood. You cannot make assumptions on what a person means. Jeff gave a reasonable response and I am sure he meant no ill will.

I have to chime in also. Without turning this into a long session in defense of Jeff, I will just say he is one of the most helpful people on this board and I can't imageine a rude bone in him. He has helped many people with DIYs with his time and expertise. Suffice it to say I don't think he meant any disrespect in his post. We're all lucky to have his help.

Yes, perhaps I was too sensitive.

I wish it had been phrased nicer, though, or at least not as abruptly.

Therefore, I apologize. I am home with the flu as well (fortunately, not SARs)
