Post Best place to buy a 993 Turbo?

I am interested in buying a 993 Turbo.

Where would you suggest one look to find "the right car at the right price?"

Are there any websites or classifieds you recommend?

Any problems to watch out for that are particular to the 993 TT?

Sean,
I found mine on www.cars.com but looked through all the sources I could find. Auto Trader and dealer websites to name a couple, I just checked my favorites and a bunch of the links I had are no good or I would give you more.

There was a great website for the 993 turbos that gave what to look for but it is also not working for some reason. Here is a link to Robins site which can give you a bunch of info on the 993.

Edit: oops, here's the link.

Happy hunting,
Pete

Check out www.993tt.com as well. Lots of good information on TT's in general.

For model year differences, do an archive search, it's been talked about many times.

TT's are going for a great price nowadays. When I got my TT, I wanted a low mileage example, but that was just becuase of my ignorance.

I wouldn't be afraid from getting a 30K+ mileage example now. I think I paid a needless premium to get one with less than 10K miles. Oh well.

Also, take a look at the TT in this picture ( the first porsche ). The owner has ( regrettfuly ) expressed some intrest in selling it. I can give you his email if you want to follow up with him.

Thanks Jeff, that was the site I was looking for.

Sean, I also paid a premium for a low mile car but don't regret doing so. I intend to keep my car until death and wanted as many as the miles to be mine. I do however agree with Jeff in that there is nothing wrong with a higher milage car, I came very close to buying one that "old fartus emeritus" now has. ;-)

And Sean, you'll have to get one in Polar Silver, since that's the color that both Pete and I have.

I was recently contacted by email from a guy that was lurking on this board. He was looking for a TT, and asked for any help. Gosh, it was fun helping him look. We even went to a private party in the San Fernando Valley and looked over his 24,000 mile 1996 blk/blk TT. Despite the fact that I took a car with almost 50,000 miles on it (and its right for me), with his intended use of 4K to 6K miles per year, we agreed that he should pay a little more to get a lower mileage car. He is in a final negotiation stage with that seller right now... it may be in his driveway this weekend! I'm sure we will soon be welcoming a new 993TT owner.

Pete got the right car for him, and his use. Frankly, the low mileage cars were out of my budget, and my car is working flawlessly. I love it, I love it. I really ought to sell the Cobra before my 15 1/2 year old starts eyeballing it.

Sean, there are several 993TTs on eBay. They are rarely sold in auction, but are there for advertising purposes. When you see an interesting car, call the seller, and talk. If your're still interested in a particular car, ask a local Rennlister to go look at it for you. If all that pans out, get it inspected and fly out and buy it. Have a great road trip home. The car I described above was found in the LA Times classifieds. There are great buys out there! Also check Autoweek magazine classifieds, although right now, they seem overpriced.

Sean, also check out porsche magazines like "excellence" and "911 world".

I saw quite a few TT's for sale in the dupont registry also.

Also check out classified ads too. I actually found my car while searcing on the www.sjmercury.com site. It turns out that they consolidate classified ads from all over the country. My car was listed for sale in Denver.

The www.cars.com site rolls up adds from a ton of newspapers. So in reality both Steve and I found the car the same way. Him on Paper, me on the web.

BTW, Sean, Jeff is absolutly correct and this point can not be argued with. The only color to get is Polar Silver.

Sean, I know what your next question is going to be. So here is a link to a photo album which shows the difference between artic and polar silver.

http://www.cuberootconsulting.com/gallery/album31

And if by some chance you weren't going to choose silver, well.....

Thank you all for your great replies.

I was speaking to a famed local Porsche mechanic today, and he told me (in a gravely coarse voice)..."If aaaah could haaave one caaar, and mooonehy were no object, it'd be thuh 993 Twin Turrrboooh." And this guy knows his Porsches.

So I am shopping and agree that silver is a great way to go. (And yes, I know the diff between polar and arctic...though I've been guilty of favoring less subtle colors like speed yellow.)

Given the economy, I am looking for a good deal..and ALL advice is greatly appreciated! If anyone knows of any deals out there, please don't hesitate to chime in or drop me an email.

I like to buy from Porsche fanatics. Check regional PCA car clubs too.

I've been looking for a glacier white TT for a while to replace my glacier white C2. I'm thinking nobody would notice. A stealth change.

Olav,

Go see the other thread; "how to hide expenses from the wife". Your plan is perfect. "Honey, I'd like to buy a rear spoiler for my car", and then swap cars. I love it. There was a white 1997 TT advertised recently at an incredibly good price. Turns out it had a salvage title because of an engine fire. Had a brand new engine with a turbo S ECU, I think. I'm not recommending this course, but it WAS interesting. I've seen several white TTs on eBay in the past few months.

Good luck on your search.

The problems I'm running into is trying to find a turbo with no interior options or very little options.
If I can keep the interior as close as possible to black it could go relatively unnoticed except where is says "Turbo" on the inside and out.

But, the people I am around mostly wouldn't take a second look because it looks the same for all intents and purposes.

Olav:

Take a look at Richard Sloan's site....he has a '97 993 TT....40,000 miles or so....white/cashmire...ignore his price....he called me about a month ago and the price was right, i.e. cash and carry price

May be worth a call
