So what about this car?
I'm not sure it's a good idea to drop a Turbo on an engine that wasn't designed for it, but would like to hear comments on what you guys think.

Greg, give Todd Knighton a call and ask him about this car. Try to get from him the details of the work involved and have him check it out and give you a written report. An independent PPI on th engine would not help much, as this car is very different.
You will receive many different opinions pros and cons. If you like the car and like the way it drives, it can be a blast. It'd better be in great cosmetic condition as well. Check the transmission for noises, cluncks from the diff, synchros etc..this can get expensive.

Gary,
This car sounds pretty well done, and is virturally new. Odd that it has only 2000 miles in the past two years. In my slightly biased opinion, you'd be a heck of a lot better off considering a factory 993TT for not too far off the same money...

for example.

it is for sure well done BUT it is not a twin turbo.
you cant easiliy upgrade that engine to lets say 480 hp like a twin turbo.
it will be more difficult to resale that car than to resale a 993tt.
in germany you can find a lot of those cars and they sell for a lot less than a stock 993tt.
so if you just want to drive the hell out of it on the track take it for 40K but not for that price.

I just got a copy of the original invoice from Protomotive. No engine work was done at all, just bolted on parts. The invoice shows TWO "T3 S60/72/.63 Dry Turbos" on it, TWO "Wastegate 40.6", and two "Hardline Twin Turbo" whatever the heck that means. It has a 993 TT intercooler (the most costly part) also. The cost for the kit installed was about $14K, the front/rear aero was the rest.
1. So is it a twin turbo setup after all?
2. Is this a bomb waiting to go off?
I'll most likely call Protomotive on the 5th to try and get an education but my instinct tells me that the engine should have been re-worked to 993TT specs before tossing on a (twin?) turbo..
Thanks!

It does seem like a twin turbo setup. Not having internal work done does not disqualify the car automatically, it depends how far the setup is taken.
If you are getting this car at a large discount vs. a TT and you like the car , it might be worth considering, after you have spoken to Todd K. and understand exactly its condition and gotten some type of guarantee from him. Since compression does not seem to have ben modified you might want to know at what boost is this car running? The advantage is that you have a twin-plug setup.
A very high mileage TT (for the same price) might give you more headaches and cost you more to refresh if it was not properly maintained. I would not disqualify immediately this car, I would do a thorough checkup though. Check out the other thread from Frisbee.

It definately is a twin turbo, I heard from Todd Knighton today.
" I believe we did that conversion for (name deleted for privacy) back in February '03.
http://www.geocities.com/protomotive/obd993.html shows what goes into them and the results.
Unlike the description on the sale page from buxtonmotorsports, it's a twin-turbo system, not single, and uses Garret turbo's, not KKK, though they are S60/T3's.
It was a Stage 1 system, not Stage 2, so it is a bolt-on, unless they had upgraded it since, but I would have had to have done the software for them, and have not.
I believe the only issue he had was with the clutch, and installed the GT2 stuff to remedy that.
Check out the web page on the Stage 1 description, and I'll be happy to help you with any further questions.
Protosport would be closer to you for service if you purchase this car. They may even be able to show you around, or give you rides in identical Stage 1 993's for your reference. they're at (973) 839-5353 Talk to John or Paul."
