Never hurts to follow up with the seller in case the high bidder falls through (which happens a LOT). I bought my 944 turbo that way - local car I went to see it, checked it out and then offered cash. Seller wanted to let the auction go so I said "if it doesn't work out give me a call". One week later he called and I'm driving the car now. Higher bidder fell through.

This was on ebay previously and sold. Assume the buyer walked or something else went wrong with that deal.
