Default clutch pedal pressure question

For starters I am new to both 993's and turbo cars, so please forgive me....

I had a 96 993tt (40,000 mile car) this past weekend for an extended test drive. One thing that felt strange to me was the variation of the pressure needed to push the clutch in.

I would say on 5 out of 10 times I depressed the clutch it felt very smooth and light with little pressure needed to push it in. On the other 5 out of 10 times (just a ball park) it felt very stiff to push in and required about 5 times the force to depress it as the previous times. It seemed to change with no pattern (car hot, cold, etc).

Is this normal, or do I need to worry?

-ps- yes the car will have a ppi before I buy it

No, not normal. The 993TT has a boosted clutch, and very complicated hydraulic circuit. My uneducated guess is that the hydraulics are clogged, dirty, or ready for a new slave cylinder. Not a horribly big deal. Search on this forum... someone else had a similar problem about 6 weeks ago.

First - Accumulator.
Second - Slave cylinder.

I had the same problem. I had a bad power steering pump. You'll ask what does the power steering have to do which the clutch. Well the hydraulics are connected.

Well, actually they are not connected. It's just one pump but it have two separate circuits. I don't know exactly how it works but I guess there are two pump houses on the same axel. It could be the pump but then you most likely would have problems with the steering also. Of course it could be that only the clutch "pump house" part that is bad but I think it's more likely that it's the accumulator or the slave cylinder.

DV 993tt: Didn't you have any problems with the steering? Was it just the clutch?

Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone!

Erik

I didn't have any problems with the steering. It was only the clutch.

OK

Still, I would go for the acc first because that's way cheapest. Second, the slave cylinder because it will need to be changed sooner or later anyway. Third, the pump. I heard that the pump is a expensive SOB.
