“Name that noise” intermediate tapping noise cyl 4,5,6
Hi everyone, has anyone run into this problem before? I have a intermediate tapping noise passenger side when the motor is warmed up. Compression was checked 110psi, plugs swapped, plug wires checked, cam timing checked, motor was just rebuild heads were done by reputable Porsche machine shop, install of wrist pins clips were extensively checked during the build. Car ran fine for the few starts and the noise randomly appeared.. Any ideas what else I should check before I pull the motor out?

Does the ticking come and go like it sounded like in the video or is it the microphone on the camera?
It does sound like a failed lifter, I guess that you replaced all the lifters - sometimes you get one that just does not pressurize right.
I have never heard of an injector make that very metallic noise, but you never know. That is an easy test, disconnect one by one and see if the clacking goes away. The car will sound different, but never a metallic noise like that.
You may have to drop and start stripping it down again - check the rocker placements, the rockers themselves, the lifter. If the heads were done, perhaps there was an problem with the guides and or valves/seats. Then it does deeper.
I would not run it very much until you get it solved though. Best of luck!!
Cheers,
Mike

I agree with Mike, I would say "hydraulic lifter" too.
(By the way, A mechanic stethoscope can helps sometimes, to locate this kind of noise)
Also, sometimes 993 lifters reboot after awhile, sometimes they don't.
That's not an expensive part, and do not requires a lot of labour.
Check also that the new oil quality and viscosity match the requirements.
And yes, be careful not to go high in rpm before solved.

Thanks for all the replies. Just to give you guys an update, everything was checked as most of you suggested and nothing was found out of place. I decided to idle the car at 3000rpm for about 10min and after that the noise was gone just as mysteriously it appeared. My guess was that cylinder 6 rocker arm was stuck or not getting sufficient amount of oil but who knows. I failed to mention to you guys that the rocker arms are mechanical not hydraulic. I did use the stethoscope to pin point the noise to cylinder 6 intake side. Car was at the tuner and it made 620hp at 1 bar 705hp at 1.7 bar . Cheers
