Default Cigarette lighter adaptor to make them fit tight

Way back in the dawn of time, I had a little sleeve that slipped over the standard cigarette lighter plugs so they snugly fit into the "euro" larger openings (then on my rovers) I can't find it and would like to buy new ones for the 993 so my USB charger will stay plugged in without wedging crap in there. My internet searching hasn't let me down. Anyone have a link to them to buy?

I know the old metal body Escort Passport radar detectors ( remember those?) used to come with that adapter / shim as part of their accessories. I did a search on Escort Passport accessories and nothing came up.

I've been able to get a better fit by adding a piece heat-shrink tubing around the plug. You may need to cut out the tubing around the metal contacts on the side of the plug.

There is a thread on Pelican which describes the fix I used in all the P cars.

The metal sleeve works great but I found in a couple of my cars there was an additional step as the OEM lighter socket had a bump protrusion and I needed to modify the new sleeve slightly.

Hi Cemeto,

What was the additional step to accommodate the bump protrusion? Is this bump present in the 993 socket?

There were two small protrusions inside the lighter socket.

A Dremel tool made short work of making additional cuts in the new sleeve (not the lighter socket).

I've updated the photo, with green, to show where (approx.) the additional cuts are. Not a big deal at all.

Also realize this sleeve is completely removable if desired down the road.

I did bend the tabs slightly outward so it would stay in place better.

Regards,

.

I have been looking for the plastic sleeve insert that used to come with radar detectors. For now I have jammed a couple pieces of thick paper to wedge the power adaptor in.

Ha! You are not far off. I do have some matchbooks from sullivans and that is exactly the right type of paper.

the metal insert works. Trouble is that with it in place, the factory cigarette lighter will not fit and using a generic one looks a bit goofy. So I just put the sleeve on my ctek connector and it now holds nicely in place. For those that want to use this method also, don't push the sleeve too far into the cigarette lighter socket, because it will be hard to remove.
