I can't speak to this specific car, of course, but in another case, the original street car was converted into a full blown race car and the books etc simply found their
way to the back of a desk drawer and were forgotten. Until they were found and the race car had been sold.

We have had several bought at the memorabilia meet and Porsche swapmeets. Cars that get converted to race cars (as noted already) do not need an owners manual and cars that get totaled unfortunately.
There is a huge market for owners manuals for 356s also.

How would we connect with "the rightful owner"? sheesh!

I think you missed my point. The maintenance book, if original (ie. has the option code sticker in it along with possibly the original owners name, service stamps, etc.) has value to an owner of the particular car. If it was me, I'd post the VIN, the current state where the car is registered and any other pertinent information that can be derived from the book. It's a small [air cooled] world out there. Certainly no issue with selling these books...just a lot more gratifying (to me) in connecting an owner to this irreplaceable document.
