Looking for interest in new car club
I am interested in getting a group of air cooled Porsche owners together for specific hands on maintenance classes at a local shop in Connecticut.
The shop in mind is Black Horse Garage, they do multi million dollar restorations all in house, from upholstery to Ferrari engine builds and they just hosted their first class of this nature. I can personally think of a number of topics i would be interested in as a newbie wrench but would also love to learn about more advanced topics. We would have access to their shop and put one of our cars on the lift and walk through the process with one of their techs. Classes would last for about 4 hours. The price would probably depend on the number of attendees. This email is to see what the level of interest may be from folks who could commute to this part of the state. Feedback is welcome.
Thanks for reading.

I'm not local, but this is a really cool idea. There are several jobs I would love to witness and ask about in-person before tackling them myself.
I mean this forum is great and all, but working alongside a skilled mechanic would be priceless IMO.

We do this as one of our local PCA chapter events. Always a big draw.

Been doing that for 20+ years now, and during the annual BBQ I host for the last 11 - usually every region has a few private individuals with well equipped shops this can occur at. Mostly its 1:1's, but I also seem to get smaller groups, and then the big crowd at the BBQ.
I like the idea of it being in a commercial shop as well - although the amount of hands-on would be quite a bit reduced. We had a local event lately at a local shop, it went very well and they were not sales centric which makes it much more comfortable.
Best of luck!
Cheers,
Mike

I'm semi-local. Sounds like it could be interesting. As a noob mechanic there are several things I'd like to take care of that are probably simple but give me pause.

Thanks for the input guys
I have reached out to my local PCA as well.
I would like to have enough people attend that it is cost effective for us all.
If you are interested can you please PM me with your email address and I will keep you updated as I learn more

I have had some updates on my concept since getting feedback from several of you. I have decided to do this under my local PCA umbrella as it will provide the shops participating in the events to have insurance endorsements for each event. Working with PCA also allows me access to their database of members to advertise events. I am putting an outline together now to review at my next PCA board meeting. I was hoping you guys could help me come up with a list of topics for meetings. Oil changes, brakes, bleeding brakes are on my short list but any additional ideas would be great.
Thanks allot

update on event
I thought I would share some photos from our event today
Dan Jacobs of Hairy Dog Garage was our host
The meeting ran from 9-2
We had 25 guys at the event
5 of them had their cars on lifts
We did oil and filters and brake fluid flushes on them all
The one thing I did learn was that the 993 was the most difficult of the bunch to change the oil on
It was really an awesome time
Can't wait for the next one
Check out the Jackpoint jack stands Dan introduced us to
Really a brilliant way to keep you safer when working under your car at home

Very cool Todd! The 993 is definitely the most complicated 911 when it comes to oil change in my experience. Although I don't know what's involved in the 991 oil change, haven't done one of those yet. But considering you have to remove the rear bumper on those cars to change the air filter you may have to drop the whole engine for an oil change lol
