New book by RLer Andreas Gabriel: "Porsche Speedster– Legends live forever 1989-2011"
As an enthusiastic owner of Porsche documentaries by Berlin Motor Books, noticed on their website today that RLer Speed-Star (Andreas Gabriel)'s newest work will be released very soon.
Speed-Star's first Rennlist posts were on the 993 Forum when BMB published 2011's "Porsche Speedster – auf den Spuren einer Legende" -- a German-only release. The limited edition is no longer available, but you can read more about it on the "Speedster type 993 photo thread."
Speed-Star's "911 Turbo Air-Cooled Years" is available, & praised on threads like RLer Flachbau's "New German Turbo book."
Today's excerpt from Berlin Motor Books' website about this thoroughly new Speedster tome available in English & German:
“Porsche Speedster – Legends live forever 1989-2011”
Strictly limited print run of 997 copies worldwide:
On the 30th birthday of the Porsche 911 Speedster, Andreas Gabriel embarked on a journey to fathom the last secrets surrounding this legend. Why was the 911 Speedster presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987 with a slimline body when it could only be ordered in the Turbo look? Why was the successor model, the 964 Speedster, then only available in the slimline version after customers had already become accustomed to the Turbo look? Why was an official Speedster version of the last air-cooled Porsche 911, the 993, never built? On his quest, he visited Porsche veteran Herbert Linge and talked to all the project managers for the previous 911 Speedster series.
For this book Porsche opened its historical archive. Which is why the book shows previously unpublished documents alongside unknown photographs of Speedster design models and prototypes. Internationally recognized Porsche expert Tobias Kindermann also compiled an exclusive technology and statistical section for all Speedster series. Thus all the paints and VIN numbers of the original 911 Speedster models could be published for the first time.
Included are pics never-before seen on RL:
The only 993 'born' as a Speedster at the factory, F.A. "Butzi" Porsche's 1995 NB Tiptronic:
...& a 1998 born as a normal-production car & driven by Jerry Seinfeld for ~1,000 miles then converted by Werks 1/Exclusive in 2000 & delivered to the USA in 2001. [As recalled from chatting with Mr. Seinfeld & his broker at Laguna Seca in 2009 when they saw my 993 at Monterey, CA.]
Can't wait to read more on their provenance, thanks to Andreas!
P.S. To those that have sent PMs & emails, including for advice on building your own 993 Speedster: I just moved. Thanks for your patience 'til done unpacking.

Jäger,
thank you very much. It was a lot of fun to do this book.
I was honoured to meet Herbert Linge and could talk with him about the history of the Porsche Speedster. And of course you know that Herbert Linge worked together with Max Hoffman in his New York Office.
And it was also very, very interesting for me to meet the people who were involved in the Speedster-project from 1982 on. So there is an interview with Friedrich Bezner, who was doing the Bott-Speedster with his team in 1982.
And there is an interview with Bernd Kahnau, who did the G-Model Speedster in 1988. His father built up the production in the early 50ies in Zuffenhausen. It was very complicated to find the man who was the Project-Manager of the 964 Speedster, but I also found him and he could help me with my questions. So there are also new aspects of the 15 Porsche 964 Speedster turbo-look.
I never met more interesting and more friendly people for a book-project before.
I hope you will like the book...

Hello Daniel,
it is a completely new book, I think there is not one picture of the old book in the new one. There are all colours of all Porsche 911 Speedster included (911, 964, 993+997).
For exampel, I counted all 931 different colours from all 964 Speedsters.
And I counted all the different gearboxes (manual + tiptronic).
The fairytale of "16 Porsche 964 Tiptronic-Speedsters worldwide" should be finished for all time by now. Nearly 20% of all 964 Speedsters were delivered with tiptronic...!
have a good sunday everybody,
Andreas

What is new? There is an unseen Speedster Styling-Model from the "Design Studio" in Weissach. It was built in 1984 and Friedrich Bezner told me the story of the car.

Good to see that - many other reviews will follow in the next weeks, I guess.
I am quite busy in the office these days, doing many hours of signing books.
Christmas is coming, I can fell that... Wishes for special signatures are welcome,

Jäger,
have a great and peaceful 2017. We people of Berlin are not in the best mood, these days. You know what happened at the christmas market in December...
I knew who had to get the 993 of 997...!
I hope that you can enjoy the book and especially the interviews and (hopefully) the new aspects of the 911 Speedster history. It was so exciting to meet Bernd Kahnau, Friedrich Bezner and Herbert Linge.
best regards,
Andreas

Thanks, Mike: I am ...and 993 times better when we cross paths again
^^ Quotes:
- "The Porsche Factory opened its archives to allow Porsche expert Andreas Gabriel to answer many questions about these wonderful cars using previously unpublished documents and photographs. Technical expert Tobias Kindermann has contributed a detailed section that lists for the first time all the VIN numbers and paint finishes of every 911 Speedster made, by model and country."
- "The book covers one of my favourite subjects - why did Porsche never build a 993 Speedster when this would have been such a beautiful car with the purest lines of any air-cooled Porsche since the 356 Speedster?"
